tips for surviving the pandemic: things i learned from my immigrant parents
It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a little over a week since the WHO announced that the coronavirus (COVID-19) was officially a pandemic. This has been a long, challenging week for a lot of people and it is nothing short of terrifying to read reports of what is happening in Asia and Europe as many predict that we’ll likely endure a similar fate here in the United States. In the midst of all of this chaos and uncertainty, I’ve been reminded of so many lessons that my Taiwanese immigrant parents taught me. I’m sharing them here so that others might also benefit. Thanks Ma. Thanks Daddy.

“You already went out yesterday.“
1. Learn how to stay home. Our family is eight days into self-isolating at home and Tony asked me this morning if I had cabin fever. And strangely, the answer is no. I’m not. Not to downplay the difficulty of this moment but my experience with this “shelter-in-place” ordinance reminds of pretty much all my summers between kindergarten and 8th grade. Both of my parents worked full-time so summer was just three blissful months of nothing. No structure, no plans, no camps, no playdates, and no responsibilities. My parents never made me feel like I was missing a thing by staying home and I don’t remember ever feeling bored. There were always library books to read, stories to write, and thoughts to journal. Hours were spent playing school with my big sister (now a first grade teacher!), making up random games like who can avoid touching the carpet longest, learning Kim Zmeskal’s latest gymnastics floor routine, writing lyrics to Kenny G saxophone solos, and rehearsing for our variety show that we would perform to our tired parents at the end of the day. And that’s not even including the hours we spent watching The Price is Right, CHIPS, Knight Rider, and Airwolf (yep, no cable).
As a teenager I carefully plotted all my hangouts with friends so that I didn’t have too many consecutive days when I was out of the house. Whenever I asked my parents if I could hang out with friends, they would always say, “But you already went out yesterday. What’s wrong with staying home? Why do you always have to go out?” It was as if having too much fun two days in a row was off limits. If there was a big party on Friday, I would purposely make sure I stayed home Wednesday and Thursday just to increase the chances of being able to go out on Friday. I know a lot of people talk about how awful their high school years were but I was one of those lucky kids who had a really great group of friends that made me feel seen, loved, and cared for. The downside was that I couldn’t get enough of it. I was always thinking about the next hangout, the next event, the next thing. It took me all the way until my late twenties to fully appreciate the fine art of staying home and to finish my unexpected transformation into the expert homebody that I am today.
I’m reminded of that old quote by Blaise Pascal, “All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone."
It’s great to be out and about, but it’s also really important to learn how to stay home.

“What are we eating for dinner?” “Cleaning the fridge.”
2. Be creative with what you have. I love food. Not in a foodie sense, but I get a lot of pleasure out of eating. I’m not a food snob by any stretch of the imagination. I thoroughly enjoy a Stouffer’s frozen lasagna or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as much as I enjoy a fancy, inventive, Michelin-starred meal at Commis. What’s hard for me is when food is eaten as sustenance rather than with delight. But my parents taught me that you can always take pride in preparing a meal. No matter your ingredients.
My mom is an excellent cook. I know a lot of people think their mom is a good cook but my mom is legitimately skilled in the kitchen. There were some nights when I’d ask what was for dinner and my mom would just reply, “Cleaning the fridge.”
Now for some, this might sound terrifying. But my mom could honestly make something out of nothing. I still crave my dad’s simple egg and garlic fried rice. My parents raised me to be able to make an tasty meal just from rummaging in the pantry and fridge for random leftover things. There were plenty of summers where lunches and snacks were an individual culinary adventure for each of us kids. I still remember the day I witnessed my baby sister add a Kraft single on top of her onion ramen noodles. She saw my confusion, shrugged and said, “You should try it, it’s good.”
With all the hoarding folks have been doing during this pandemic, I’ve found myself feeling quite anxious. Trying to calculate if we have enough food. Estimating how many more meals we can eat at home before we need to make another grocery run. As someone who struggles with a scarcity mentality it has been hard not to panic. But then I keep reminding myself that I know how to make good food using just whatever’s available.
You know, I was pretty disappointed with Mary H.K. Choi’s second novel, Permanent Record, given how much I enjoyed her debut novel, Emergency Contact. But I was absolutely thrilled with the shine she gave to what her protagonist calls “Hot Snacks”.
Here’s an excerpt from Permanent Record that is a beautiful ode to creative food mashups and immigrant kids everywhere:
“I edit and post a Shin Ramyun Black video set to music. My favorite instant noodles with three flavor packets and so much garlic. It’s a classic Korean HotSnack, especially when you throw in cut-up hot dogs, frozen dumplings, extra kimchi - and this is where the artistry comes in- eggs, cheese, corn from a can, and a drizzle of sesame oil on top. And furikake if you’re feeling wealthy. The next night I put up a bacon, egg, and cheese not in a bagel but in a glazed honey bun. Laced with sriracha and pan fried on the outside. Then it’s chilaquiles with Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos and chorizo. Jamaican beef patty casserole disrespected with a smothering of Japanese curry and broiled. With Crystal Hot Sauce over the top and pickled banana peppers. I’m trolling with that one but the controversy is berserk. When I run out of old videos, I make saag paneer naanchos with Trader Joe’s frozen Indian food, and it’s a hit. Especially when I add yogurt and a thick layer of crushed-up Takis on top.”

“Watch soap operas.”
3. Find a way to escape. I’m generally pro technology but I’ll admit I’m a little bummed at the way iPhones and iPads have made TV viewing such an individual activity. I like how Disney+ has gotten some families back to watching TV together again. Although I will say, we really coddle our kids these days. I grew up in a time when movie ratings only applied in the theaters and we watched movies with our families like Alien, The Fly, and Gremlins. We were scared out of our minds and sometimes could only watch through the cracks between our fingers covering our eyes because it was so scary. Okay, this also might be why I can’t watch horror movies as an adult.
From a young age, my parents taught me that watching other people’s drama unfold on screen is one of the best way to escape your own drama. Some people say binge watching became a thing when the TV networks started releasing shows on DVD. Others give credit to Netflix releasing their original content a whole season at a time. But truth be told, I first learned how to binge watch from my parents.
We would rent 30-40 VHS cassette tapes from that random spot in Bellaire Chinatown. Can you picture it? You needed multiple plastic bags to transport that many VHS tapes.
Do you remember the one about the dying mother who needed to find homes for each of her 7 children? I don’t think it’s normal for a 10 year old to cry so much but you better believe it’s made me learn the true value of a soap opera escape hatch.
Are you in a pandemic? Now’s the perfect time to pick up that YA novel, binge that reality show, start that kdrama, or rewatch all six seasons of The Sopranos again.

“It’s going to rain next week.”
4. Be informed about what’s ahead. If you ask either of my parents about the weather at any given time they can reliably tell you the daily percent chance of precipitation and humidity for at least seven days out. They’ve always been this way. They would inform me of the weather at various points throughout the week. They planned their yard work and car washes around the weather forecast. There’s something about the way the weather forecast is available to everyone. And it feels like it’s just a matter of making the small extra effort to access it and gain a slight advantage. I feel like so much of the immigrant mentality is to be diligent in making the right choices to not screw yourself over and seizing opportunities whenever you can. And it wasn’t just weather but this is such an obvious example of it.
I remember my dad saying to me once, "Can you imagine if someone decided to read every book in their local library? If they just went shelf by shelf and systematically read all the books? You could do it, you know. It’s free, it doesn’t cost any money to check out a book from the library. But no one really does it.”
I think immigrant parents get a bad reputation for forwarding chain letters and health/science hoaxes they get on email, WeChat and Line. And in a pandemic, yes, they are definitely susceptible to misinformation, rumors and flat out untruths. But the thought behind it seems right.
The mistrust of government leadership is actually quite relevant right now in this pandemic. Many immigrants left countries with governments that were overtly corrupt, oppressive, and used propaganda to influence its citizens. And while many Americans still take pride in living in a country that verbally champions freedom and democracy, the truth is that our government has already failed us and lied to us in many ways. During this pandemic, we cannot wait on leaders to tell us what to do. We must be diligent in reading for ourselves, seeking experts, using our critical thinking skills, and making preparations accordingly.

“Are you cold?”
5. Check in with yourself. Check in with others. I have so many memories of my parents walking through the living room and asking me and my sisters if we were cold. It felt like they couldn’t walk past the thermostat without asking us if they needed to raise it or lower it. As if they couldn’t hear us sneeze and wonder if they needed to turn off the ceiling fan. They couldn’t see us sitting in a dim room without turning on a light for us. There are so many times I fell asleep reading on the couch and woke up with a blanket over me. Or sometimes I was fully awake doing something random, like playing Egyptian Rat Screw with my sisters (a cardgame for the uninitiated), and my mom would walk by and wordlessly drop a warm, heavy blanket over my shoulders. That’s care, y’all. Consistent, immediate action, and often without words.
The tip here is to pay attention to your discomfort during a pandemic. There’s this immigrant stereotype of stoicism and that’s true to some degree but maybe the resilience is made possible not because of unnatural toughness but largely because immigrant parents can also be so incredibly perceptive and tender in some very tangible ways.
When everything is chaotic around you and you’re busy multitasking these next few months, don’t ignore your needs. Notice how you’re feeling. Physically and emotionally. Where are you carrying your stress and tension in your body? You don’t have to tough it out. Oh and remember to check in with your people on how they’re feeling. Is there a light switch you can turn on for someone?

“Laugh to death.”
6. Laugh to survive. Look, we didn’t have the perfect family or anything like that. We’ve definitely had our share of difficult times, financial stress, health issues, arguments, and pain. But my parents also really knew how to laugh and taught us to laugh with abandon. Like, bent over, tears running out of your eyes, can’t breathe kind of laughing. Our dinner table was kind of like a writer’s room. It was difficult to tell a mediocre story. You had better come prepared with a punchline or a point. It was a tough crowd, every night. On many occasions I stopped myself halfway through a story upon the self-realization that there was no real way to land the plane. Polite laughs were nowhere to be found, except perhaps a charitable smile from my baby sister. But it didn’t stop us from trying. I think my sisters and I are all probably better storytellers for it and we definitely have learned to try to bring humor into difficult times.
I know that this pandemic is so incredibly dark and depressing that it can sometimes feel disrespectful, inappropriate, or childish to laugh at anything. But my parents taught me that you laugh to survive. Nothing is ever so dark that you can’t find a reason to laugh. And sometimes you really need to find something to laugh about.
I’ve been taking long breaks each day from major media news outlets but I have been finding such joy and laughter from the meme creators on IG and the comedic geniuses on Twitter. In Taiwanese when something’s really funny, people will say a phrase that is imperfectly translated as laugh to death. Like you killed a person it was so funny. Now’s the time to find that content or those people who will get you to laugh to death.

“I’m going to go re-park the cars.”
7. Go to bed with a plan for the next morning. I grew up in a suburb of Houston, Texas where one property developer built the entire neighborhood and used the same eight or nine floor plans for all the houses but changed up the brick and trim color to keep things interesting. Most homes have a long driveway that connects a garage set near the backdoor of a home to the street. By the time I was driving, we had four cars in total -- two in the garage and two on the driveway. At the end of the day when everyone was home for the night and my dad was getting ready to go to bed, he’d announce, “I’m going to go re-park the cars.” Then we’d all kind of stop what we were doing and rearrange the order of the cars to match our morning departure schedules. This meant figuring out who was leaving when in the morning and sometimes also prompted brief check-in conversations about any changes in our usual routine.
In a pandemic it can sometimes feel like there are a million different things to attend to and large conceptual concerns that demand your attention. But there’s something calming and centering about spending a few minutes each night thinking through specifically what needs to happen just tomorrow. Not the day after or next week. Get super tactical and specific about what tomorrow morning looks like. Check-in with your partner about any aberrations to your schedule (e.g. I have a super important conference call at 7am tomorrow) to minimize any unnecessary surprises. There’s something magical about setting up your morning that helps you rest just a little easier at night.

æ˜ŸæœŸäž‰æˆ‘ć€‘æœ‰çŠ±ć‘Šæœƒ.
“On Wednesdays we have prayer meeting.”
8. Make time for your spirituality. Growing up my parents both had physically demanding jobs. My mom was a seamstress for many years, providing alterations at my aunt and uncle’s dry cleaners. She later worked in an elementary school cafeteria and then eventually became a classroom aide for special needs students. My dad worked at that same dry cleaners for years until he got a job at the post office. He then became a letter carrier, delivering mail on foot. The summer months were especially grueling, carrying a heavy sack of mail in 100 degree, humid weather, and walking until sweat soaked his shirts and blisters formed on his feet. They had every excuse to skip weeknight events. But unless they were sick in bed, I can’t remember a time when they missed their weekly prayer meeting with their friends from church.
Pandemics have an unsettling way of forcing us to confront our mortality and can trigger a bunch of unresolved shit that has been bubbling underneath the surface. We’ve lost some of our usual coping mechanisms and it can be super hard to quiet the anxieties, fears, and other demons that we usually try to keep under control. This isn’t a lecture about a particular faith or belief system. It’s just a reminder to prioritize your existential questions, your interior life, and your connection to things much bigger than yourself -- whether that’s a community, a yoga practice, a faith group, a tradition, or something else.
I have a fledgling meditation practice that I’ve been trying to strengthen since last year. When I say fledgling I mean that sometimes I bail before the ten minutes is up and check my phone. Even though I’m not very good at it yet, I can really tell the difference on the days that I make time for it. Our church started hosting its weekly Sunday service online and that’s challenging for me because a church service feels like it’s designed to be so much about the physical rhythm of going to a place, seeing faces of people I love, hearing their voices co-mingling with mine in song and in prayer, and tasting the bread and wine in my mouth. The online service was short, and just for viewing through a zoom conference call, but there was still something meaningful about setting aside that time Sunday morning, asking our wiggly kids to be present, and saying the liturgy out loud knowing that in homes all across the country, other people are doing the same.
If things are really going to get as bad as some are predicting, we’ll need the spiritual strength to make it to the other side. Those habits are hard to form overnight. My parents taught me that you really have to make the time for your spirituality non-negotiable, so that you won’t abandon it when it’s inconvenient or when you are too tired.

“What choice do we have?”
9. Rise to the occasion. Whenever my parents are telling old war stories about things they had to do to get to where they are today, inevitably one of us will say, “Man that’s crazy, how did you manage to do it?” And instead of pointing to some super personality trait of theirs or some complex self-help principle, they always say, “We had no choice.” It’s not said in a defeated way, but in a posture of accepting that life can be cruel, unfair, and capricious. And that it’s not helpful to dwell too long on the why’s and how’s. My parents taught me that you can’t stay in despair mode. You eventually have to push yourself into problem solving mode and you do whatever it takes to move forward.
This coronavirus is so unlike anything we’ve ever experienced in our lifetime. It is so unprecedented for me that my brain is having a hard time processing the reality of what’s happening right now and the rest of my lived experience. I spent the first few days of this week just being overwhelmed, anxious, angry, and irritable. At this point though, I’m in go mode. I’m doing what needs to be done for our family and taking care of business. What choice do we have? I can hear my parents saying it. One day, if we’re lucky, we’ll say it to our kids too.

I keep thinking about this moment when I was about 8 years old a lot nowadays and have only joked about between friends. I dubbed it as my own “creepypasta moment” seeing how check boxes it crosses on the list of bad creepypasta tropes. So when i was 8 my parents switched cable companies and were setting up the cable boxes throughout the house. When this stuff happened I would have a hard time switching from public access shows to regular cable. This time was no different. I landed on a channel that looked as if it was a morning show from a high school with the bad acting, poor props, and teen hosts. They spoke about events (I do not remember if they were related to a school or local) before switching over to the weather being told by a cheap parrot puppet with the female host from the opposite sexed duo controlling and saying it’s lines. After that it either faded to a different segment or to a totally different show. There some real shit starts. It began with a old woman made of blobs of clay sleeping in her large violet bed in a room of similar dark colors. It was pretty cramped and it showed it’s true budget. The woman’s voice (Mary I think?) was being repeated by a deep voice, waking the woman up from her slumber. She sat up in her bed to have a floating eyeball made of clay as well that was large enough to take the majority of the frame up. He revealed himself to be the evil eye and began preaching about sinning or something along those lines. He proceeded to teleport her to a desert of clay. She was topless for literally no reason. The evil eye was threatening her that if she continued sinning he would be stuck to wander the sandy desert. The mix of the religious undertones and the woman’s boobies being out little me changed the channel out of fear to a random basketball game then proceeded to cry my eyes out. My mother helped me switch over to some regular cable television while I tried to explain to her what just happened. My theory is that they might have been two different public access show: one being related to a high school while the other some sort of religious organization or small team. Or even they were connected since the old woman sounded similar to the female host. I doubt it was some cursed show by satanists or some shit just a cheap show by some bible freaks that wanted to warn people about sinning.I wouldn’t blame anyone for not believing this since it sounds too trashy to be true. Again I was like 8 when this happened so I could have remembered it much more messed up than it actually was.

Ray Flores paid his dues to become boxing’s new voice

Ray Flores paid his dues to become boxing’s new voice
Tumblr media
18 Aug by Joseph Santoliquito As he walked out still damp from swim practice, the brush of a chilly breeze forced Ray Flores Jr. to clench his shoulders and yank his jacket tight to his neck. Little did he know he was stepping into a seminal life-changing moment. His father, Ray Flores Sr., was waiting for him in the warm, humming car out front of East Chicago Central High School one winter day in 2002. Ray Sr. was a Spanish teacher who wanted more for his three sons. He had a deep, baritone voice that could punch through walls. It commanded respect every time he spoke, especially to his boys. Ray Sr. had a way of being direct without being confrontational. So, when Ray Jr. tucked himself into the car for the 10-minute ride home that afternoon, he caught the brunt of it. Ray Sr. was transparent with his boys. Raising them, whatever was on his mind he said. As they drove home, Ray Sr. darted a look at his oldest son over a brewing concern and asked, “Listen Ray, are you going to become an Olympic swimmer? I hear you talking about swim practice and stuff, but what about your education? What about your future? You really need to apply yourself to something you can hang on to move forward.” A few months later, Ray Flores Jr. walked into ECTV, a local public access cable station in East Chicago, Indiana, looking for a summer jab. Ray Jr. can look back at that epiphany as to why he’ll play a central role in the broadcast of the Manny Pacquiao-Yordenis Ugas fight for the WBA welterweight title on the FOX Sports PBC Pay-Per-View this Saturday (9PM ET/6PM PT) from the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada. “My father saw a critical moment where the swimming and my social life was becoming more important than my education and he wanted to shake me up a little bit, and I’m glad he did,” admitted Ray Jr., who will be calling the media press conferences for PBC this weekend, as well as the FOX international broadcast of the fight. “If it wasn’t for that particular conversation, I would have swum all four years in high school. I don’t think I would be where I am now if that talk never took place.” Ray Jr., who will turn 35 on August 30, would watch Julio Cesar Chavez fights with his father when he was a child, feet dangling from the edge of the living room sofa, mimicking what the fighters were doing on the screen. Ray Sr. would playfully chide him that he would only sit still for fights and Chicago Bears’ games. That was it. Otherwise, Ray Jr. was constantly moving. He still is. He easily travels 40 of the 52 weeks a year. Though he’s in his mid-30s, Ray still looks like he’s 16. He was actually that age when he walked into ECTV. Ray got an internship and worked an hour a week doing local community news and started a teen talk show. When the internship was over, he was impressive enough to be among a handful of students that the local station asked to stay on and work after school. He would do an hour-and-a-half a day during the week when school got out at 2:30. Soon after, the city of East Chicago, a hamlet in Northwest Indiana about a 31-minute drive from Chicago, bought ECTV, which allowed Ray to suggest broadcasting local high school basketball and football games. From there, Ray had a chance meeting with Miguel Torres, East Chicago’s only semblance of a sports star at the time. Torres was a World Extreme Cagefighting champion, who eventually graduated on to the UFC, before MMA was nationally regulated. Ray started following Torres and asked if ECTV could start covering his fights. Ray Sr. would make the short trek to the Ramada Inn in Hammond, Indiana, where Ray Jr., then 17, would conduct fighter meetings and then call Torres’ fights from the Hammond Civic Center, a quaint 4,000-seat arena. “I did so many events there that I grew up in that building as a commentator, and as a ring announcer,” recalled Ray. Jr. “Fight fans growing up in Philly had a legendary place like the Blue Horizon. I had the Hammond Civic Center. We were so low budget that I had to literally sit next to the camera, plug in my microphone in the upper deck of this 4,000-seat arena and called the fights next to the camera with my notes in my lap. “I think that’s where things started for me. In 2005, I began a new boxing and MMA radio show, but I wondered how I would do it, considered boxing is such a visual sport. I got a lot of help from old Chicago Tribune boxing writer Michael Hirsley would come on. But there were some obstacles. “From an MMA standpoint, I got a great start quickly from guys like Joe Goytia and Mike Davis gave me the chance when I was a sophomore at Columbia College Chicago (where he graduated with a BA in radio and television). Joe called me up to be the ring announcer for his fights that paid $200 a night. You’re a college kid, so $200 is a lot of money. “In boxing, Bobby Hitz, the Chicago promoter, gave me my opportunity a year later, in 2008, 2009. But the real breakthrough in boxing came in December 2011. Joe Martinez, who works for Golden Boy, did a local MMA fight that I was working, and I did the first half of the night and Joe did the second half of the fight. “I met Joe in the summer of 2011 and he took a liking to me. He called me out of the blue in November of 2011 and asked me if I could fill in for him in Indio, California, and I sent them a tape. I’m so blessed, because so many people are so great to me. From there, I started doing one show a month for Golden Boy since Joe was so busy.”
Tumblr media
Ray was once a five-year-old kid watching the legendary Joe Goossen corner Gabriel Ruelas. Ray began announcing one card a month for Golden Boy and doing Floyd Mayweather undercards on large shows, like Mayweather’s fight against Canelo Alvarez in September 2013. During the Mayweather-Marcos Maidana undercard in September 2014, Sandy Goossen-Brown, Joe’s sister and Tom Brown’s wife, heard Ray and told Tom about him. In December 2014, Ray announced ESPN’s “Night of Champions” when he ran into Brown, who runs TGB Promotions. Brown asked Ray to do a Showtime ShoBox show the following week. In June 2015, Brown began bringing in Ray to host press conferences. Banner Promotions’ Artie Pelullo, Marc Abrams and Matt Rowland helped him take another step in April 2015 in getting the Lucas Matthysse-Ruslan Provodnikov announcing assignment on the HBO card. Ray received some pushback from some major network people, but he had strong allies in PBC, Brown, Kelly Swanson and Sam Watson pushing his cause. Eventually, when given the chance, he proved himself to the doubters. His talent spoke loudly. “I grew up when legends honed their craft, with Marv Albert and Bob Costas with the NBA doing Chicago Bulls games; John Madden and Pat Summerall doing NFL games; and Steve Albert, Ferdie Pacheco, Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward calling fights,” Ray said. “I remember watching the Julio Cesar Chavez beat Greg Haugen in 1993. I was watching the countdown show three hours before the pay-per-view and I wouldn’t move. “Watching the prelim fights, there was Azumah Nelson fighting Gabriel Ruelas, and the trainer for the Ruelas brothers happened to be the legendary Joe Goossen, who I work with now on FS1. I was watching Joe corner Gabe Ruelas 30 years ago, when I was five. Talk about life coming full circle.”
Tumblr media
Ray made sure to create a good path for younger brother Miguel to follow. Ray Jr. could be the most viewed boxing announcer in the world today. He’s also the only ring announcer who then broadcasts the same fights as the blow-by-blow man. He handles PBC events as the media host, handling press conferences and grand arrivals, is the Triller blow-by-blow announcer and is the international broadcaster for the PBC fights on Showtime and FOX. Miguel Flores, 27, sounds just like his brother. And if not for Ray Jr., Miguel wouldn’t be where he is on the boxing broadcasting tree. Their goal is to be like the Buffer brothers, Michael and Bruce, one day. Miguel is heading in the same direction as Ray. “I’m very proud of Ray and I wouldn’t be where I am without him,” Miguel says. “He has a great, distinctive voice, he’s passionate about sports and anything to do with sports and boxing. He was there with Miguel Torres, and Ray would even use his own dime to cover some of his events. “Ray wasn’t handed anything. He started honing his skills at a young age. He did everything and loved it. A crucial part of his development and what you see now is the polished experience he got with ECTV and all of the things he did there. My dad really pushed that, and the voice definitely comes from our father.
Tumblr media
Miguel (standing left) and Ray have a special surprise for their parents, Ray Sr. and Sandra, seated with younger brother Alejandro, this weekend in Las Vegas for the Pacquiao-Ugas fight. “If me, Ray and my dad were to all talk together, it would be tough to distinguish us. But if you were around us a lot, you could tell the difference. I remember Ray calling Bulls’ games standing in the living room watching games. I don’t remember my parents thinking Ray was nuts (laughs). They encouraged it. Teachers would tell my parents all of the time how special Ray was.” This weekend is a big deal for Ray Jr. personally. It’s not big because it’s a Pacquiao fight or for the attention the fight brings. It’s big because for the first time, Ray Jr. and Miguel get to treat their parents, Ray Sr. and Sandra, to a big fight in Las Vegas. “It’s something very special,” Miguel said. “Being in this industry, there’s a lot of running around and a lot of the work that goes into what we do. We’re on the road three and four weeks at a time, and it’s not a normal life, but sharing this with Ray and my parents will make this weekend special. “Ray is the one that started it. He set the path. It’s one of those weekends that we’ll never forget—and I get to share it with my parents and my brothers. It’s what makes what I do so much better. I have a brother like Ray.” Joseph Santoliquito is an award-winning sportswriter who has been working for Ring Magazine/RingTV.com since October 1997 and is the president of the Boxing Writers Association of America. I was born in 1995. If you ask some, I am a member of Generation Z. Others will say that I am more of a millennial. No wonder I’ve always felt like I straddled the line between the two. While technically I’m a member of Gen Z, before the time when “generational experts” and marketing firms started targeting my cohort, I played the part of a millennial, doing all the things that those same marketers labeled as being peak millennial behavior. This means: I got my fashion tips from Tumblr, started a style blog on Blogspot, and dressed like every other person my age in middle school (first, at Abercrombie; then, Urban Outfitters and Free People). It wasn’t until college that I even thought to try thrift shopping. Once I had, it was years before I learned the ins and outs of the trade — which days my local Goodwill locations got new stock, what’s salvageable and what’s not, and how much is too much to spend on a pair of vintage Levi’s. Thrifting now feels like one of the most Gen Z things I do, and it’s no wonder: For Gen Z, thrifting isn’t just a way to shop — it’s a lifestyle.
Olivia McCafferty-Cable,17, from Santa Barbara, California, has been thrifting regularly since she was 13. “Thrifting allowed me to find things at very affordable prices that no one else I knew had,” she tells Refinery29. “I like standing out with my clothes, especially at school, because I tend to be a very quiet person, and [thrifting] was a way for me to express myself and push myself outside of my comfort zone.” Hannah Valentine, a 19-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri, doesn’t even remember her first thrifting experience. “Thrifting has been a constant in my life for years,” she says. “I’ll never stop loving the rush of adrenaline that I get when I enter a thrift store not knowing what I’m going to find that day.” While Valentine fell for thrift shopping because of the search aspect, over time, it turned into something else entirely. “Now, I thrift because I want to help save clothing from being thrown away, while also providing an easy and accessible way for people to shop secondhand so that they’re not instead shopping on fast fashion websites,” Valentine says. The way she does the latter is through Depop, an online marketplace where many members of Gen Z have set up shop. (According to The Wall Street Journal, of Depop’s 15 million users in 2019, 90% were under the age of 26.) Valentine’s Depop page is scattered with floral maxi dresses, ‘90s sportswear à la Princess Diana, and retro pins from Steak & Shake. She offers sizes up to 3X and uses her platform on the app to advocate for people with disabilities. “I think of my job as a second-hand clothing rehoming service,” she says.
Another seller on Depop, 23-year-old Monique Miu Masuko, started her thrifting journey in middle school. Ever since her mom told her when she was a kid that buying secondhand was the easiest and most affordable way to stay on-trend, Masuko hasn’t stopped thrifting. Like so many others before her, took her favorite pastime and built a career out of it. Now her Depop shop has 2.8k followers. “[Thrifting] is more affordable, accessible, and eco-friendly — all three of which go hand in hand with sustaining Gen Z’s future,” she says.According to Deloitte, Gen Z’s interest in thrifting could have something to do with having entered adolescence during the recession of 2007 to 2009, when the oldest members of Gen Z were between 12 and 14 years old. Many grew up experiencing financial hardship, and so it makes perfect sense that they’d be searching out economically friendly ways of staying in fashion. Gen Z isn’t the only demographic actively shopping secondhand right now. Fashion search engine Lyst reported that, in September, there was a 104% increase in online fashion searches for secondhand-related keywords like “vintage fashion” and “slow fashion,” the latter of which was responsible for more than seven million social impressions. But they are the largest demographic: An estimated 46% of Gen Z shopped secondhand in 2019, according to Medium, compared to 37% of millennials and just 18% of Gen X. Since Gen Z has matured into its spending power, the resale market has grown significantly. In fact, it’s grown 21 times faster than traditional retail over the past three years to be worth $24 billion in 2019. It makes sense. Unlike millennials, who are said to “seek validation through purchases,” members of Gen Z are obsessed with being different from their peers. Ask the question of “why thrift?” for instance, and it will result in a wide variety of answers. (I’d know, I talked to over 30 of them.)
Some listed being able to look unique and build a more personalized sense of style as one of the reasons for thrifting. Tori López, 24, from Brooklyn, New York, says she found an “inexplicable sense of empowerment and independence” in wearing pieces that felt made for her, even if they were previously owned by someone else. “Wearing ‘one-of-a-kind’ clothing makes me feel special; it makes me feel unique; it makes me feel happy — and if that outfit costs you $30, all the better.” Elena Dunn-Barcelona, a 24-year-old from Harlem, fell in love with thrifting during her senior year of high school because it allowed her to compete with her classmates style-wise “for an eighth of the price,” she says. “I was one of a handful of Black kids at a predominantly white boarding school,” she tells Refinery29. According to Dunn-Barcelona, everyone there wore the same things from the same brands (“Sperrys, J.Crew, Free People, Vineyard Vines, etc.”), none of which her parents were willing to buy for her: “There was no way they were going to hand me $60-plus for a top that would be out of style before the school year was over.” Thrifting made it possible for Dunn-Barcelona to build confidence in her style without overspending. It also allowed her to find options that fit when off-the-rack styles wouldn’t because of her scoliosis. “I have a shortened torso, and stand at only 4 feet and 4 inches, which makes shopping for clothing a constant struggle for me. But after a while, when I’d find cute things that didn’t fit me, I realized that someone else might love them, so I turned it into a business,” she says. Her Depop shop, Mighty Thrift, sells clothing in sizes 0 to 5X and has over 5k followers. By August 2021, she says thrifting will be her sole way of supporting herself.
There is also the matter of the climate crisis looming, which many listed as a major motivation for thrifting. “Thrifting taught me that I can positively impact this world in more ways than one,” Lopez says. “It’s granted me an entryway into a new way of living that feels more productive and purposeful.” She explains that what started as a mode of expression has since catalyzed a more intentional lifestyle, where, across categories, she’s more considerate about her purchases: “Now that I’m older, I find myself frequenting more local businesses, paying attention to companies’ stances on current political issues, and buying quality over quantity.” During the lockdown, many young people took to TikTok for entertainment. In the process they also learned about the damaging effects that fashion — and other powerful industries — has on the environment. Of TikTok’s 800 million worldwide users, 60% are members of Gen Z, many of whom are using their fast-growing platforms to promote thrifting as an alternative to fast fashion and an easy way to minimize waste. The numbers don’t lie: #ThriftStore has 92.7 million views on the app, while #Secondhand has 90.8 million views. “So much of our clothes get worn a couple of times, then head to the landfill, which is really gross considering how many resources go into producing clothes,” says 24-year-old Lily Fulop, the author of Wear, Repair, Repurpose: A Maker's Guide to Mending and Upcycling Clothes and a designer at Refinery29. “We need to produce less clothing, and make use of the clothes that are already in existence,” she says. One of the easiest and most affordable ways to do that is by thrifting: “It saves water, reduces microplastics and petroleum use, cuts down on pollution from pesticides, dye, and shipping... the list goes on.”
According to Emily Reyes, a 21-year-old living in New York City, Gen Z YouTube influencers like Emma Chamberlain are in large part responsible for showing young people that, unlike what their older family members or friends would have them believe, fast fashion isn’t the only way to find on-trend clothing at an affordable price. The 19-year-old YouTube celebrity — who has 9.6 million subscribers on YouTube and 8.3 million followers on TikTok — is known for frequenting Goodwill. Chamberlain’s thrift hauls, videos in which she goes through the items she recently thrifted and styles them on herself, are among her most popular videos on both platforms. Thrifting feels emblematic of the way that Gen Z prefers to stray from the beaten path — a path beaten to death by millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers, that doesn’t even seem to be going anywhere anymore. They want to be independent. They want to save the planet. They also want to save money — and make money. And they want to do it all in a cute outfit, probably one that costs less than $10. Thrifting makes all of that possible. Now that I know this, I look forward to making up for lost time. It's a clichĂ©, but this year was supposed to be our year — full of independence, opportunity, or at least a few weekend afternoons spent with more than 10 friends with fewer than six feet between us. But with COVID-necessary social distancing, a shitty job market, and closed campuses, 2020 hasn't given us much to work with. Past generations have had to deal with a recession, social upheaval, and changing norms: We've had to deal with all of it at once. So, what now? What do we do with our careers, our relationships, and our lives? How do we move forward when we're still stuck in our high school bedrooms? These stories are for us — filled with the resources, blueprints, and people who are finding ways to turn all this garbage into something like lemonade.

This Is Moaning - Chapter Three
[one] [two]
Every Saturday for the past year, I've set up a stall in the middle of the market of my home town under a banner that simply reads 'Tell Me About This Place.' Maybe there's something to talking with a seemingly anonymous stranger; people have been more candid with me than they might be with their partners, their friends, their doctors, their therapists. I've had people tell me about their lives, their hopes, their frustrations, their ambitions, their complaints. I now about their secrets, their hates, their fears. They told me about the affairs they were having. I've learned more about the human geography of this place, a town I grew up despising. All the names have been changed, as is only fair. But these are some of the stories from this past year. I listened, I wrote them down, and now I'm sharing them with you.
 Welcome to Moaning.
Chapter Three
“I've lived here all my life. Born here. Raised here. Thought I died here once, but that turned out just to be a big sneeze.”
Richard Goose, 74
From the way you come into Moaning, you might incorrectly think it a beautiful place. The early hours of placid morning shield you from the clattering rattle of rage and commuting misery that the nine o'clock news will send chundering through the streets. For now, before the collected munch of plain white toast and slurp of instant butter from improvised napkin/sock, before the buses start wheezing and spluttering and coughing, before the crows carry last night's discarded kebab scraps into the desolate playgrounds for brunch, everything is still and serene, quiet the way morgues are, spread thinly with a domesticated silence broken only by the suicidal neighs of bored horses in fields and the opinionated gossip of collared doves in the salons of the trees. As you walk, one foot before the other, as seven out of ten leading podiatrists recommend, you wonder if it's such a bad place after all. It's sort of greenish, in that nondescript way that so much of England is. It's less fair and pastoral, more the green of sickly moss, of neglected bread that got accidentally kicked under the freezer for an eighteen month-long residency. It's the green that's such friendly neighbours with mud. Green that's spelled 'bilious.' Green that comes in a discontinued paint tin marked 'syphilitic tortoise.'
To be fair, you picked a bad day to turn a stranger's eye to your hometown. On less queasy-skied days, from your vantage point next to the “Please Slow Down” signs, the view is remarkable (but then again, there is literally nothing that cannot be described as worthy of being remarked upon), a greasy palette of green and brown fields that kaleidoscope into something more beautiful than individual strips of combed mud. A view which, pending an amateurish cataracts diagnosis, could warp and coalesce to picturesque, an adjective that's become less insistent of itself since the widespread availability of phones that can take pictures. These days even eyebrows are picturesque. Still, you can see, if only grudgingly, why someone would come across this rough bowl of God's green soup and decide to found a town, long before it descended to a cardboard caricature set of pubs, discount biscuit shops and betting outlets.
But come here they did, and the baton of ages has been passed from generation to generation, tumbling over the dust of lifetimes, to arrive at you, walking without thinking, stepping forwards into this town that has shaped and raised you as much as your parents. We all acknowledge ourselves to be a product of our surroundings, but that normally comes down to public admissions of love, or the threat of raised fists, or the ready access to pocket money, or the sorts of newspapers that made it into our homes, or whether the pavements outside were smooth, or whether you get your clothes first or second hand. Those sorts of things do not define us, but they draw a rough outline to start with. How cynically we celebrated Christmas. If you ever saw your parents kiss. If you could trust the police. What we recognise less is the sheer geography of the places we called, or were begrudged to call, home. How the curving spine of roads and mountains shaped the length of our stride, how the concrete warped our feet to meet their cobbled slabs; how we are but part of a production peopled by streets and shops and sirens, clouds and curses and curtains, and whether as a result, we gracefully bow before a rapturous audience, or instead just skulk off to get high in the dressing room.
We are, in the end, not just what we eat, but what we say, what we pass. What we demolish or refuse to go on funding. Who we ignore and who we celebrate. We are speed limits and local election turnouts. We are what we choose to put on a two-for-one offer. We are the regularity of buses, the time it takes to see a doctor. We are the sum results of home towns all over the world. Part-pork pie, part-park path.
You have, for the most part, the roads to yourself: the sounds belong to you, staggering breath caught and reeled in by the cold, the industrious slap of shoe against concrete, pavements warped and reconfigured as cooled and once-molten rock, buffed down by an over-enthusiastic pedestrian surgeon. You pass houses, their blank faces silently screaming in the darkness. Occasionally you see a light, a long-shadowing lamp or fluorescent tube pulsing from a kitchen or living-room, where someone inside is resigning themselves to work or school, kneeling before the altar of instant coffee, enduring eighteen seconds of mortifying world news, before siding with the continued health of their soul by turning the channel to lucrative re-runs of some American war crime of a sitcom. The catchphrase here in Moaning is nothing but a long sigh, a beleaguered rubbing of unmoisturised hand over tired face, and a sinking feeling that yet another abysmal-weathered day is beginning. Here, laughter is not canned, but baked beans with little gelatinous sausages are. Here, only grey skies are syndicated.
Here in Moaning we wake with the awful realisation that not only is this Life, corporately logo'd and aggressively advertised Life, but Our Life, and the one we inexplicably find ourselves having to mercilessly lead. Even the birds sitting in nutrient-starved trees are shivering and thinking about the day's first cigarette. A kingly fox, coming home after a long graveyard shift of sifting through bins to find something other than fried chicken bones (just for a change), stops to stare as you walk past, offering a solemn and slow-blinking nod as if to say, “I know mate, rough night.” As you pass one house, through an open kitchen window you hear what you both hope and assume is a baby crying, its raid siren wail cutting through the morning's quiet like austerity measures through a mental health clinic, and faced with the scant options available in Moaning, you know exactly how that baby feels.
You walk away from the main road, which is ashamed about the litter acned across its face, the inconsistent pebble-dashing of scrunched fag boxes and crisp packets and parcels that were unable to be delivered in the miniscule estimated window between 6am and 9pm (even now a different fox is pawing tentatively at a dew-darkened brown box, hoping to find something edible with a bit more fibre than it's accustomed to. Its cubs are sick of donner meat scraps and pepperoni pizza crusts. In fact, what's actually in the box is an industrial strength vibrator modelled on the exact dimensions of a newly-famed contestant from a celebrity reality show, who eschewed a traditional catchphrase in favour of repeatedly exposing his exasperatingly large member). You wander aimlessly, away from the main road and into a collapsing warren of cul-de-sacs, residential areas and rows of terraces. There's a man sat smoking on his front step, dressed only in a neon pink child's dressing gown, exposing his rage-swollen testicles for all the world to see. He nods at you. With his face.
These sunken-shouldered houses squat side to side, industrial red brick smooching year round Christmas decorations, the town as uniformed police force trapped on perpetual work outing. Here, a front garden means weed-freckled patches of concrete, for the most part vagrant, but occasionally populated with black bags of rubbish or an abandoned installation of rust that may once have been a functioning bicycle, or a dejected item of white goods, a chest freezer than now doubles up as a waterlogged submarine to play in, or else an unnecessary doghouse, or a sleeping person whose epic return from the pub was tragically thwarted by an obstinate front door which insisted on opening only to the Chosen Key.
As you walk, there's occasionally a small shop or supermarket – modernity has not yet fully reached Moaning and so candlestick maker stands beside launderette, bakery next to walking cane store – and it is in the car park of one such little supermarket that you see pigeons, teeming seemingly in their thousands, stripping the ground of discarded crisps and fizzy pop, small birds jacked up on energy drinks and pork scratching crumbs. Your approaching footsteps trigger their caffeinated anxiety, and the flock goes up in a messy riot of dusty wings and chip fragments. They circle in splattered formation, wheeling over the houses to eventually thud on roofs and sagging telephone cables, to jostle and impatiently watch, as though they've picked up a few tricks from vultures on documentaries seen through front room windows. As soon as you'll leave, they'll re-descend to finish off their breakfast of off-brand cola and floor-presented fish batter. You walk in the five o'clock shadow of the regional chain supermarket (“new location in Small Burbridge coming next year!” a sign outside reads), its face orthodontically wired in graffitied white shutters; by day its grubbish entrance welcomes a revolving cast of shoplifters, exhausted parents, exhausting children, bored teenagers and money-shriven shoppers who are jealous of the audaciousness of the shoplifters but too meek or law-conscious to cross the picket line and tuck a thirty-two-bag family-intended compilation of crisps (several flavours: Salted Salt, Salty Vinegar, Salt and Onion, Salt And Salt, Salty Salt Again, Salt and Salt Again, and Plain) under their jackets to claim pregnancy of very rustly twins. “Scab!” protesting thieves yell at those who belittle their community by handing over coins for their hardly earned purchases. “You should be ashamed!”
Outside the shop, a man sits in the driver's seat of his car, having decided that it was too difficult to successfully do his commute from the more luxurious choice of the back seat. He rubs his face with the weariness that only twenty-seven years doing the same thing for a living can bring. A job for life, he once reasoned, was supposed to be a good thing, a measure of financial security. But know he knows the difference between a job for life and a job for a lifetime, and today he feels the weight and age of it as a judicial sentence.
It can be easy to think that places like Moaning are where ambition comes to die, and for the majority of its inhabitants, it marks only an insignificant blob on the map that defines the microscopic distance travelled between places of birth and death. When they gratefully collapse into Death's sticky embrace, some can boast, or at least mention, that their deathbed window is within sight of the very room in which they entered this world; Moaning becomes nothing but the dullest of carousels, alighted and rotated for but a minute, a short lifetime, taking in the sights of youth and adulthood and middle age and old age, before stepping off with nothing to show for themselves but the memories of light and sound. “I want to go again,” they may say, but Death, attendant of life's carnival, merely shakes its head and explains that their coupon is only valid for a one-time entry.
There's almost a perverse pride that people in Moaning cradle, celebrating the tiny exodus from Saint Hopeful's Hospital on Smallot Street to lifelong home on Meek Avenue to soft grave in Knackered Meadows Cemetery. All that the light touches, my son, will one day be yours. But it's looking pretty overcast so I wouldn't get your hopes up.
So the supermarket manager sits in his car and thinks about what it's all for. Maybe he once dreamed of being a lion tamer, or lion torturer, or porn star, or supermarket regional manager, or professional yoghurt interpreter, or politician, or worm, but he has his bed, made consistently for twenty-seven years, and all he has to show for it is a slightly superior tog of duvet. That, and a delightful wife and two brilliant children, all of whom he adores and is immensely proud, but he isn't about to let something as ordinary as marital bliss and a perfect legacy ruin his carefully constructed bad mood. He's spent almost three decades honing a foul temper for the daily audience of his employees.
He was born and raised here (in Moaning, not the supermarket itself – they haven't allowed births in there since they lost an entire shipment of frozen peas to the unexpectedly early arrival of Mrs Ferris's twins, one of whom now works in the very same supermarket and is an average member of staff, the other of whom does very little but smoke weed, masturbate to animated cartoon pornography and harass the park's pigeon community) and so he knows what is expected of him: you cannot be seen to be happy in Moaning. It just smacks of showing off, like going to university, or reading a newspaper that has adjectives, or putting a wedge of lime in a larger. Even if people are happy, visual confirmation or verbal admission is the social equivalent of stepping on someone's foot at a funeral to stop their whole 'wah wah wah who would do this to a five year-old' shtick: it's just not polite to do.
Life in Moaning is to be met with a stiff upper lip, a lip that is ready to converse about the weather and miniscule complaints, grumbles worn as badges of honour. Any life that is seen to be too wholesome or interesting or fulfilling is a sure sign of deceit, guilt, stupidity, homosexuality, Communism, or vegetarianism, all of which are forbidden – not by law, but by unspoken agreement – in Moaning.

In the Crosshairs (30/?)
@theluthor
By the time they reached the border to the Eyrie, Ygritte’s ransom video was playing on every news station in Westeros.
No one had bothered to tell Jon. He called Margaery’s untraceable phone to chew out Sansa. Margaery heard clearly despite Sansa sitting in the back of the car. Sansa took it all in, never flinching at his words or tone of voice.
“It was her idea, Jon. If you have a problem, take it up with her,” was all she said before hanging up.
The car ride was particularly draining for her. She had confessed that she’d been feeling nervous having not heard from Bronn for some time prior to leaving High Garden. During the dirve Petyr called her. A body bag containing Bronn’s body riddled with bullet holes was discovered in Flea Bottom. Sansa cursed before hanging up on him. She told Margaery that evening while Oberyn had gone to a rest stop.
“We need to tell him,” Margaery told her.
Sansa glanced over Margaery’s shoulder to make sure he wasn’t returning yet. “Margaery he’s known as the viper for a reason. I don’t want him knowing.”
“Cersei knows something is up. We need to trust each other and we need to trust him. It only confirms what we already knew: Cersei knows the Starks are back,” Margaery insisted. They both knew it meant much more. Sansa had lost her man on the inside. All advantage they had through what limited knowledge Bronn had acquired was gone.
The media whirlwind picked up after that. Although Margaery still felt her story was incomplete, there was no more time. Oberyn dropped her and Sansa at the cabin before going back to town and using one of the local library’s computers to send the article to Doran. It was the front page story of the King’s Courier. She imagined the look of eerily calm anger on Jorah’s face when he saw the cover. He would call each one of his reporters into the office. But he would never suspect Doran. He was too well-reserved and he and Margaery had barely spoken to each other in her year there.
That evening Ygritte stumbled into the train station in Dorne, directly into an Unsullied officer so she would be whisked away to King’s Landing asap.
Half of the reporters in the city were camped outside L&C while the other half were on knocking down doors to get an exclusive interview with the miraculous escape of Ygritte Thenn.
All of this is relayed by Oberyn. The mountains have shotty cell signal, no satellite signal, and outdated television cables. Being the least suspicious of the contingent, he spends his daytime in town. Sansa speaks daily with Petyr Baelish and her sister. The two are holding down their operations well enough for the time being, as far as Margaery can tell.
It’s five days after they’ve left High Garden when Sansa knocks on her doorframe and comes in. Margaery sets aside her book and looks up. Sansa gives her a soft, wary smile. “Can I come in?”
                    Margaery nods.
Sansa shuts the door quietly behind her. For once, Lady doesn’t follow her in. Likely she’s out roaming the trees around the cabin. From a distance she looks like a wolf, so any wanderers steer clear of her.
“What are you doing?” Sansa asks.
“Distracting myself,” Margaery says. Without writing and media to occupy her time, she has too much time to think about Loras’s rescue mission tonight, to think about her grandmother’s continued comatose state, and to the about what Sansa is to her.
“Loras will be okay. Jon knows what he’s doing, and I trust Podrick,” Sansa assures her. Podrick must be her inside man.
“I know Obara,”- Alayne frowns at the name -“and Jon are prepared. He’s been in there so long, and he hasn’t had anyone to help him grieve. I’m scared of what Loras will be when he’s out.”
Sansa puts an arm over her shoulder and pulls her against her own shoulder. Margaery tucks her head against her neck. She glances down and notices the tattoo of her name underneath her nose.
“You and Garlan and your father and grandmother will be there to help him. He’ll come out okay in the end,” Sansa strokes her hair. It’s such a familiar gesture that for a moment Margaery imagines that they’re sitting against the couch in Alayne’s living room just talking. “Margaery, I want to talk to you about me and my past.”
Margaery sits up. Sansa stares back evenly, not giving away sign of hope or desperation.
“Tell me, what became of Sansa Stark?”
*******************************************
“The basics you probably know. I grew up in Winterfell, I had three brothers and a sister. My Aunt Lyanna died in a car accident when Jon was still a toddler. Father took him in and raised him as part of the family.
Then there was the mafia business. Dad did his best to keep it out of the home. Only his most trusted men had access to the home. Howland Reed, Petyr Baelish, Jon Umber.  Back then there was no need for the mafia to be underground though. Press would take pictures of mum and dad when they were out, even Robb. They were more protective of me and the little ones. We wore disguises in public and never made actual family outings.
I knew dad was into some bad things. He and mum would argue about them when they were in bed and thought I was asleep. But he loved is so much. We were his greatest concern, even if he had a duty to the North. Everyone In the North respected him for his sacrifice. Without him, so many families would have spent winters freezing and starving. He made decisions that are easy to criticize when you’re not the one responsible for thousands of lives. He was the best man.
Mum shielded us the most. She was loving and kept us from the public eye. She wanted us to live lives as close to normal as we could, even with Unsullied force members spying on us and news press looking to find that one break to catch dad in illegal activities.
When I was young, his work frightened me. But as I grew up, I saw the romantic side of the mafia: danger, love stories, romance, passion. Ridiculous dreams of lovesick girl.
That was when dad’s best friend Robert moved to Winter’s Town with Cersei and Joffrey and Myrcella and Tommen.
Joffrey was a dream to me. He was charming, he said all the right things, he had a pretty smile and pretty hair. He had an air of danger to him. He showed interest in me and I convinced myself I loved him for it. Silly twelve year-old me.
I’m not certain how it came about, but one day after my thirteenth birthday, dad came home with a contract. He asked me what I thought of Joffrey Baratheon. And I told him he was the dreamiest, handsomest, nicest boy I’d ever met and that I was in love with him. Arya scoffed at that.
He asked me what I thought of marrying him. I felt like I could jump over the Wall, I was so thrilled. Now, I don’t know why. It was such a stupid thing. What girl with a brain full of visions of romance and love and without an inkling of what the real world was would say no to a boy like Joffrey?
That night mum and dad screamed at each other until their voices gave out. Mum thought it was the most idiotic idea to sign away my life into a marriage at my age. Dad said it wouldn’t be until I turned 18. Mum screamed that it shouldn’t happen at all. I should be free to live my life. At the time, I thought I was exercising my right to be free. Dad said it was this or the North would fall apart. We needed the Lannister money to keep the investments of Northerners from driving us into a recession.
I must have fallen asleep, but in the morning, mum refused to look at dad.
I saw Joffrey more after that. I would go to his parents’ huge cabin and he would come to our house. He’d tell me how one day he would take over the Lannister mafia. No one would ever defy him.
His words became harsher. He began with simple teasing at quirks I had like pinching my fingers when I was nervous. I tried to stop doing that around him. He’d talk endlessly about how the mafia would be better under him.
I knew nothing of the mafia world back then. I would nod and agree and smile, and he would call me an idiot. I started accepting his words as truth. Then one day he hit me. We were in his backyard and next thing I know he smacks me across the cheek. He said I should respond when I’m spoken to.
It happened more and more. He’d punch my arm, whack the back of my head. Sometimes he would apologize. Most of the time he didn’t.
Arya noticed first. She saw the bruises and asked how I got them. I told myself I loved him, so I told her they were none of her business. She told Robb. Robb knocked on his door, excused himself past Myrcella and clocked him in the mouth. He said if Joffrey ever hurt me again, he’d have more than his pretty face to worry about.
Shortly after that, Robert Baratheon died. Joffrey became even worse. Nastier toward me. One day while Robb was at his best friend’s house, he came over. He put on the charade of prince charming, asking to take me on a walk to someplace special. Like every other time, I believed him for his performance and went. We held hands and he led me to this little park. I thought he’d do something romantic. Instead he grabbed a fistful of my hair and forced me to my knees.
He screamed at me to take off his pants. I refused. He’s wanted me to do things like that before, but I wasn’t comfortable doing that back then. He kicked me for not obeying. He caught me in the mouth and I started bleeding.
I’m not sure what else he would have done. Arya had been playing in the park with some boy when she heard the commotion. She ran over and saw what was happening and threw a rock at Joffrey. It bent his finger back so far he broke it. He ran off screaming.
Even after all that, I thought I loved him. He was allowed to be angry with me. Arya had no right to do what she did. I told her that much. Rather than listen to my hollow threats, she ran home and told dad what happened.
When I got home, I remember the look on mum’s face. She ushered me to the bathroom and cleaned me up. She asked me what happened, but I wouldn’t tell.
They sat down together and said no matter what, I wouldn’t be in trouble. I said I loved Joffrey.
Mum- her eyes looked so sad. I know I disappointed her then. She said there were other boys, nicer boys, boys that would treat me the way I deserved to be treated. Dad said a man capable of love wouldn’t do this to a girl. He asked me again if Joffrey did it. I nodded. He hugged me. For the first time since I was a baby, I fell asleep next to my mum that night.
By morning the contract was ripped up. Dad said he wanted nothing to do with the Lannisters. They’d make things work on their own.
At the time, I’m sure Cersei thought we’d crawl back to her. The Lannisters were on the verge of becoming as influential as the Targaryens had once been. It was shaping up to be another bleak winter and the mafia would need to increase drug sells to match demand from the families. They flooded the market with their own drugs.
That backfired on them. The Dornish cracked down on drug smuggling into the region, closing down one market. Smaller, local cartels ran their own drugs at cheaper prices. We didn’t need any of that though. Somewhere around the Dreadfort, Roose Bolton discovered oil. Dad allowed him to take a chunk of the profits himself, but that discovery was more than enough to keep the bellies of Northerners full that winter.
Cersei was furious. She took the contract to court claiming we breached our terms, but no sane judge was going to uphold that marriage stipulation. The mafia increased security for dad, but it felt unnecessary.
                    And then- that night...”
Sansa sniffles and her breath hitches.
“Sansa? Are you okay, Sansa?” Margaery gently squeezes her shoulder.
Sansa looks pale, but she takes a breath and nods. “I’m fine. Just
I’m fine.”I
“It was Robb’s birthday. It was supposed to be happy. We went skiing. It was Rickon’s first time in skis. We got home and we were going to have cake when Petyr came over. He had work he needed dad to look at. Arya and I were arguing about something, I don’t even remember what now. Mum made us clean the basement as punishment. I wonder would have happened had we not been bickering.
We were still arguing in the basement, and then there was a loud bang. The entire house shook. Arya tried to open the door but it was searing. The handle was glowing red. I don’t remember much after the smoke got in. I passed out. When I woke up Jon was giving me CPR. The house was gone. Later he told me he kicked in the basement window. Arya crawled out, Petyr pushed me out and barely escaped himself before the building collapsed.
Sansa stops again. She ducks her head and Margaery watches as she blinks the tears away. She doesn’t realize that she’s holding Sansa’s hand until Sansa’s fingers twitch beneath her hand. For a moment she thinks of pulling her hand away. The thought disappears instantly. She wants Sansa to know she won’t run away, not now. She squeezes her hand, a gesture to continue.
It was obvious the Lannisters did it. Cersei and Joffrey took everything from me. Only those closest to dad knew we were still alive. They told us of Cersei’s vile joy and Joffrey’s smugness that his damn plan worked.
I blamed myself. I was the idiot who insisted on wanting Joffrey. I was a lovesick fool and told myself they died because of me. Such an idiot

Sansa’s voice grows hoarse and muffled. Her fingers tighten around Margaery’s to ground herself.
“Hey, hey,” Margaery coos gently. She draws Sansa’s chin to look in her eyes. They’re the same pale blue ones she’s known all along. There’s desperation for acceptance in them. “You’re not an idiot. You were a little girl. You’re allowed to have dream at that age, Sansa. Dreaming is never idiotic.”
Sansa sniffles. A couple of tears stream down her cheeks. Margaery hesitates before softly rubbing her thumb across Sansa’s cheek. She shifts closer, enough to feel Sansa’s deep breaths against her lips. She pauses, and then murmurs, “I’m sorry for your family. I know you loved them.”
Sansa nods, her eyes trained on Margaery’s. “I did. I miss them.”
Margaery wants to pull back. She doesn’t. Her desire to comfort Sansa keeps her in place. Her stomach twists in knots from the intensity of Sansa’s gaze. Her hand still caresses Sansa’s cheek when Sansa moves in.
Margaery maintains eye contact up until the last moment, when Sansa’s lips brush against hers. She closes her eyes and it’s not Sansa she’s kissing, it’s Alayne. The lips feel the same when they brush hers again, more . Margaery parts her lips slightly and savors the feeling of Alayne gently sucking her bottom lip between her lips.
A hand cradles the back of her head and she pulls Sansa closer. When she pulls back, she half expects to see the black hair she’s loved for so long.
“I’m sorry,” Sansa murmurs, although the small quirk of her lips betrays her. “I think I
I pushed a little too far.”
Margaery swallows and shakes her head, while pushing herself to stand up. “I forgive you.”
It wasn’t the response Sansa was hoping for, but it was the only one Margaery felt comfortable giving. She wasn’t going to lie to Sansa. Still, she wanted nothing more than to make the pain on Sansa’s face disappear. She smiles and offers Sansa a hand. “Thank you for telling me the truth. It
 I’m sorry about your family.”
Sansa takes her hand and pulls herself up. “Being with you made it easier. Your presence makes everything better, Margaery.”
Margaery’s heart pounds faster. An inexplicable warmth drapes her and suddenly she can see it. All the similarities between Sansa and Alayne. She’s falling for her again.
The cabin door slams shut, startling Margaery away from her realization. “Margaery! Sansa!” Oberyn calls.
The girls meet him by the doorway. He’s breathless, but wearing his cocky gin. “We need to prepare the extra room.”
                    “Why?” Margaery asks.
“Because you have your brother back, Ms. Tyrell,” he opens his arms wide as though he deserves all the praise.
“The breakout wasn’t until tonight though,” Sansa says.
“What does it matter? My girl never fails. Loras is safe because of her,” Oberyn wraps his arms around Margaery.
Margaery hugs him back. She presses her forehead into the juncture between his shoulder and neck. For the first time in weeks, something has gone right. Loras is safe.

This country needs affordable health care...so why are hospitals so lavish and extravagantly fancy?
Here is a link to the hospital if you think I am exaggerating..... http://www.henryfordwestbloomfield.com/body_wbloomfield.cfm?id=52381 I don't have insurance, and neither does my husband because we can't afford $600 month premiums for insurance that doesn't even KICK IN until you pay $5000 out of pocket! But it is really hard to sit and listen to everyone complaining about the EXPLODING cost of hospitals these days with all the hospitals in my area that are constantly renovating and competing to be the most lavish or fancy or architecturally beautiful when what people really need are just some common sense medical care from good doctors who will take a few minutes to listen to them. For Example, I recently visited a friend who was in a local hospital in my area that has expanded to include the following...A boardwalk with HUNDREDS of exclusive shops (required a trolly inside it was so huge!), marble fountains and floors and glass elevators and railings, live TV shows in their own Greenhouses and celebrity kitchens, multiple conference centers complete with reflecting pools, grand pianos and atriums with full size trees indoors, a pediatric wing that was bult to look like a giant tree house, complete with Tree shaped doors, private rooms with twenty foot long leather couches that curve along the wall for visiting relatives, 72 inch plasma TV's in the room along with Xbox, and complete cable/internet access, Floor to ceiling bay windows for a panoramic view of the gardens and lakes on the property. Now my friend could NEVER have afforded to stay in a hotel this nice, and couldn't pay for health coverage either. Thank God she qualifies for to be insured thru a medicaid program that covers this...but who is paying for all this excessive stuff? The taxpayers in the United States. I can't help but think that she could get really good care at a reasonable cost at a less fancy hospital...but who is going to tell the hospital where it spends it's money if someone is willing to say its necessary to have an UBER fancy hospital in order to give our citizens modern up to date medical care ?""

Appropriate and affordable health insurance for my autistic son?
Here is the situation: My son is seven and severely autistic. He lives with his mom (we are divorced). As part of our agreement, I take care of his health insurance and medical bills, co-pays and things related to his medical care. I pay for insurance for him thru my employer, around $280 a month, just for him. However, although it is pretty good for office visits, it is really bad for hospital. Because he is autistic, he has to be knocked out for some procedures that he wouldn't normally be knocked out for. Recently he incurred a $9000 bill, which the insurance company wont pay because he already maxed out his hospital indemnity for the year. I feel that the time has come to provide him with some sort of hospital indemnity, but I can't find any that I can actually afford. I don't make very much, I make enough to pay his regular health insurance and his child support, and the occasional doctor bill. But I don't make enough to pay the huge premiums that a regular hospital indemnity plan has. To add another wrinkle, I live in New York, he lives with his mom in Connecticut, she is the one who brings him to the doctor/hospital, I'm just the one who pays for it, which I am happy to do. But the problem is, that anything available with NY, only covers providers in NY. CT wont work with me because i do not live there. Am I screwed (as in I have to pay 900 per month in hospital insurance), or is there something I can do? By the way, I make about $36000 per year, not a lot for New York. I just want to provide the best care for my son, but I need something I can actually afford""

How do I drive a new car home if I can't get insurance on it for another 2 weeks?
My insurance company said they need the car title before they can give me insurance on the car. This doesn't make any sense, the dealer say they cannot hold on to the car once it's bought because it's not their responsbility anymore. But I need to buy the car to get the title and the title won't be processed for 1-2 weeks. So once I buy the car I need to take it home but that means driving without insurance, what's going on here is it okay?""

Motorcyce Insurance (Temp) Cost? Possible?
I own a 2001 Ford Ka. I'm 18 in a month, and I pay 400 a month for car insurance. I'm looking to purchase a motorcycle in the summer, to cut the cost of petrol for going to work, and as a hobbie. I've been interested in taking up riding for a year now. I'm looking to buy a Honda CBF 125. Maybe a CBR 125. Although, I'm only wanting temp insurance. For, Say, The summer. Pay each month and stop when you want, start when you want. As sometimes some months im away, and i wont need it. I was just wondering, Could I get insurance for under 60 a month? I'm still on provisional bike licence. I just really don't want to be looking at another 400 a month for something i'm only using for sunny days/fun. Thanks!""

What can I do about this insurance/car accident?
Recently, my husband was hit in my car while going through a green light. The girl didn't see him as he was going through and turned and hit him. Now we are fighting with her crappy insurance. They are trying to say we are 25% liable and they will only pay 75% to fix our car. They are trying to say my husband should have been more cautious going through the light. It was a green light! So, what, we are supposed to treat stoplights like stop signs now? How ridiculous. My question is, what can I do to get my car 100% paid for and do they even have the right to claim who is liable or not? Isn't that the cops job? My husband decided to be nice and not have the cop issue her a ticket. Was that a bad idea? I mean, she turned into him. How much more cautious could my husband have been? He hit his brakes but by that time it was too late. This insurance company is saying he should have tried harder to avoid the accident. What else could one possibly do!?""

What would the annual insurance cost range look like for a Benz C63 AMG?

Question about my car accident and insurance?
Last night I was involved in a 4 car pile up. I was stopped at a red light when i was hit. I felt the impact of all the cars behind me. The lady who caused the accident was drunk. She was arrested. I have state farm full coverage. She has state farm insurance also.. So here is my question: I owe 7000.00 on my car. The car is valued at maybe 6000.00. I am 18 and considering going through the co-op box scheme for young drivers. Everything about it looks great (I've gone from quotes of 6000+ to 3000!) but there's one area that concerns me - I can't imagine I'll be confident enough driving any time soon to be a wreckless driver, but I intend to go on holiday around Scotland with my friends in the summer where I'll be driving for a long time. I was wondering whether this might affect my insurance premium. So for example if I drove around 5 hours a week, consistently, for a few months, and then went on a road trip and drove for 30 hours one week, would this raise my premium? I ask because on the quote page it asks for how long I'll be driving on a weekly basis. Do any current customers happen to know whether they care at all? Thank you in advance! :)""

How much is car insurance for a 2009 Benz C300?
I'm 27 years old. I live in the Bronx, New York. I have good credit. TransUnion: 765 Experian: 764 Equifax: 734 I want to financial or lease (I'm not exactly sure what the difference is. Do I still have to get full coverage regardless of which I choose?) a 2009 Benz C300. It's valued at about $30,000. I live in an apartment with my father who has a 2001 Pontiac Montana. He pays about $150-$200 per month in insurance. I tried to find out how much it would cost on Geico and they called me and told me it was gonna be $150 for the first month and $140 for the next seven months. I thought there must have been some mistake because how could it cost the same for a new car and raggedy car? The guy was like, Well, looks like we can get you a great price . Is this a ploy to get me to switch insurance companies and then they'll charge me higher rate after the first year or something? I think they must have thought I already own the car outright and didn't know I was planning on financing it. Or is it because we will have two cars from the same household an we'll get a multi-car discount. I know this was true when my brother had a car on the same policy with my dad and they got a discount, but they lived at separate places. Me and dad live together, so I think they won't even allow me to get insurance. Someone please tell if this is true or not. My friend, who thinks she knows it all, said its a scam and they will charge me alot more as soon as I sign up. But believe me she's just jealous cuz she's high class and I live in the Bronx and she makes way more than me and doesn't have a Benz. So, she is definitely just assuming. If you know for sure let me know you know or that you think that's what will happen. I assumed the insurance would be $400 - $450 per month. Also, if anyone has some idea what the financing per month with credit like mines on a car like this would be, that would also be appreciated. I have never been any serious car accidents, had a DUI or DWI. I hope someone has experience with financing a nice car and insuring, so I can get at least a ball park estimate on how much I will expect to be paying. Thanks for the help!""

Strategy: Gen Zs never watch TV, are stressed about Snapchat, and are concerned that technology has ruined their mental health — here's what it's REALLY like to be a teen in 2018
Generation Z is the most ethnically-diverse and largest generation in American history. From talking to 104 teenagers nationwide, Business Insider discovered what makes today's teens stressed out, happy, curious, and connected.
Generation Z is the most ethnically-diverse and largest generation in American history.
They're often cast as anti-social, technology-addicted, or " target="_blank"social justice warriors."
From talking to 104 teenagers nationwide, Business Insider discovered what makes today's teens stressed out, happy, curious, and connected.
Generation Z is the most ethnically-diverse and largest generation in American history.
And they're the youngest — Pew Research Center defined them recently as everyone born after 1997.
We usually view teens and the younger generations with a tinge of derision. And Gen Zs, with their obsession over Instagram and rejection of hourly work, are primed for the utmost scorn by their elders.
But we're more likely to understand what Generation Z is all about by talking to them.
Business Insider surveyed 104 Generation Zers nationwide to find out what it's like to be a teenager in 2018. Learn below about their opinions, fears, dreams, and complexities.
Who did we talk to?
Business Insider surveyed 104 teens aged 13 to 19. They came from all over the US, including North Carolina, New York, and Michigan.
Many survey respondents came from WeAreGenZ, a consultancy and think tank powered by Gen Zs nationwide.
The average teen got their first smart phone just before their 12th birthday.
Nearly 80% of teens got their first smartphone between the ages of 11 and 13.
Almost 3% of teens got their first smartphone at age 8, and 6% at 15 or older.
"We are the first generation to have had access to smartphones our whole lives. We communicate through social media and texts, which changes the dynamic of communication." — 19-year-old
"Everything in our generation is immediate. Since we have been raised in an age where texts and messages can be sent in the blink of an eye, we are less patient than other generations because we are used to having instant gratification. But our generation is also very determined to show that we are capable of real thoughts and using the technology and communication methods we have been given for making change, despite what older generations expect from us." — 15-year-old
Most teens had an iPhone.
Among survey respondents, 94% had an Apple phone.
That's higher than what other surveys have shown, but not shockingly so. Investment bank and asset management firm Piper Jaffray found that, in their semi-annual survey of around 6,000 American teens, 84% of teens plan that their next phone will be Apple.
Gen Z spends a lot of time on their phones.
Teens spend a median of five hours a day on their phone, according to the survey. But the time spent ranges considerably.
The top 25% said they spend seven hours a day on their phone — practically every moment they’re not sleeping or in school. And the bottom 25% uses it for three hours.
Teens told Business Insider about their phone use:
"Teenagers today are completely different because of social media. Now, we have access to this world-wide platform where we can insult or make someone look like a massive fool to millions while spreading that shame anonymously, and many parents these days don't know how to help their teenagers with that, especially when it comes to depression, anxiety, etc. — 15-year-old
"We are all connected and grow up quicker, so we had less of a traditional childhood." — 18-year-old
"I believe that teenagers today are fundamentally the same as in the past, but we obviously are able to gather information from a wider variety of sources and express ourselves through different means than before." — 17-year-old
That should take up a lot of time, but many teens don’t admit that phone or internet use takes up the majority of their days.
When asked where they spend the majority of their time outside of school and studying, 26% of teens pointed to extracurriculars that aren't sports.
Some studies have indicated that Gen Zs are antisocial and don't spend time with their friends in real life.
But Business Insider found that just as many teens say they spend the majority of their time with friends or family (18%) as those who say using the internet (18%) accounts for the majority of their day.
Artistic activities, sports, and video games accounted for the rest of the responses.
Teens spend as much time on their phones as adults do watching television.
A 2016 study by Nielsen revealed that American adults spend an average of five hours and four minutes a day watching television.
Business Insider found that Gen Zs watch a lot less television than their predecessors. Only a quarter of teens say they watch four or greater hours of television per day.
A third of teens watch an hour or less of television everyday. According to AwesomenessTV, Gen Zs said cable television is best for watching TV with family (43%) or falling asleep (33%).
Only 14% of teens watch television news, compared to nearly 40% of Americans.
In 2017, 37% of Americans got their news from local TV. That number shot up to 57% among those aged 65 or older.
Gen Zs aren't so fond of television news, Business Insider found. Just 14% said it's their main news source.
Six out of 10 said they prefer social media platforms to get the news — and 10% said they don't keep up with the news at all.
Only 2% of teens said they watch traditional cable television. But 62% enjoy Netflix and other streaming services and 31% prefer watching YouTube.
Only 5% of those aged 65 and up watch television through a streaming service, according to Pew Research.
"There are more options than on cable, since you can rewind or fast forward and watch older shows like Friends easier," a 15-year-old told Business Insider.
The majority of teens prefer to stream television from services like Hulu and Netflix.
Streaming wins for the lack of commercials and variety of options. Teens told Business Insider:
"It's lot easier to find something you like and watch it that second! Netflix especially has a lot of great original movies/shows." — 15-year-old
"You can choose what you want to watch when you want to." — 14-year-old
YouTube won nearly a third of teens.
They said it's free, caters to their hobbies, and, because many YouTubers are teenagers, the content is more relatable. Teens told Business Insider:
"The content on YouTube is so much more diverse and funny and relatable. The stuff on TV is so outdated. I would watch Netflix, but I don’t have the money to sign up." — 16-year-old
"YouTube is full of content that people create to keep their fans entertained with gameplay and animation about their lives, which is something that real TV doesn't really have." — 14-year-old
"People upload videos from anywhere and they're entertaining." — 15-year-old
The hottest slang words of the moment are lit, bet, shook, yeet, key, and slay.
Teens told Business Insider that these are their most-used slang words.
Here's what they mean.
Lit: When something is very exciting or energetic — like a "lit" party.
Bet: "Bet" is usually a one-word agreement — sort of like "I bet you do." You can replace "Ok" with "bet."
Shook: Shocked or surprised. Can't believe what you're seeing.
Yeet: Yeet was a dance that went viral on Vine in 2014. Now it can be used as an expression of excitement or a verb to describe someone throwing something over a long distance.
Key: The more succinct sibling of "major key," key indicates something important or vital to one's success.
Slay: Succeeded in something amazing.
We asked teens what their most-used apps were, and three stole the show: Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube.
Three-quarters of respondents picked Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube as their most-used. "You get to see what everyone is up to," a 19-year-old told Business Insider.
Snapchat and Instagram are used for communication.
More than half of teenagers told AwesomenessTV that it's easier to be themselves online than it is in the real world. Teens told Business Insider:
"I like Instagram the most because I think pictures tell more than just words." — 17-year-old
"Snapchat is just one of the most common social media for me and my friends." — 17-year-old
And they’re also just used to relieve boredom.
Teens told Business Insider:
"I can scroll through them and not get bored." — 18-year-old
"They are entertaining and I can always find things when I'm bored." — 16-year-old
Twitter came in fourth place.
In 2016, Business Insider found that today's teens actually like Twitter more than their millennial or Gen X cohorts.
Teens told Business Insider:
"I get to talk to my friends and see interesting things about shows or bands I like, or see funny memes." — 14-year-old
"I like Twitter because it is how I keep up to date with things going on in the world." — 17-year-old
"It’s easy to see content from other people who aren’t your friends in real life" — 15-year-old
Only 10% of teens counted Facebook among their most-used apps.
The same message came up again and again: Facebook is filled with their parents, not their peers. Teens told Business Insider:
"Facebook is outdated and filled with old people." — 18-year-old
"My friends aren't on Facebook." — 15-year-old
"Facebook transitioned to being social media that's mostly used by parents, so it's lost most of its appeal." — 17-year-old
"Not many people our age use Facebook." — 14-year-old
Teens mostly use iMessage or SMS to communicate with friends — but Snapchat text is also popular.
Nearly 57% of teens said they use iMessage or SMS the most to talk with friends.
More than a third named Snapchat text as their No. 1 communication method, which disappears once opened, and almost 8% picked Instagram direct message.
Just 1% said Facebook Messenger was their most-used communication method.
While Snapchat is still the second-most beloved social networks for Gen Z, nearly a fifth of them said they’re using it less.
Lots of teens said they were addicted to keeping up Snapchat streaks, which are consecutive days of exchanging Snaps with another person. Some said they would accrue hundreds of days of consecutive Snapchats, which is signified by a flame emoji next to the contact's name and the number of days where a streak was maintained.
One 15-year-old said she had friends who kept streaks of hundreds of days with 20 or more people.
But now some told Business Insider that the consuming social media has become too much energy:
"Snapchat is draining to keep up streaks. Even though people still do, lots of people say they hate it." — 16-year-old
"Everyone on Snapchat was annoying about streaks." — 15-year-old
"Snapchat is too much work." — 15-year-old
Teens prefer to listen to music with Spotify and Apple Music.
In our survey, 26% of teens said Apple Music is their top music app, while 60% chose Spotify.
Despite its popularity for video content, just 4% picked YouTube as their most frequently-used music service.
The remaining 10% were split among Soundcloud, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Google Play, and Trebel.
More than a third of Gen Zs say technology is the biggest hurdle they’ll deal with in their lifetimes.
They said technology addiction is rampant among their generation. Teens told Business Insider:
"I think the biggest hurdle my generation will have is removing themselves from their electronics. Teens are very addicted to electronics." — 15-year-old
"We aren't personable in real life because we put too much energy in our phones and social media." — 19-year-old
"The biggest hurdle will most likely be our soft skills, our ability to hold a conversation in person effectively." — 18-year-old
"Teens now are too obsessed with their image on social media and what's going on with celebrities than with the real world." — 17-year-old
Some researchers say that technology has driven Gen Z to have record low pregnancy rates and drug use.
"This digital generation satisfies so much of their novelty-seeking impulses through their phones, they hardly have the time or interest to pursue these old vices altogether," wrote the researchers at AwesomenessTV in a recent report.
Teens are less likely to have sex, try drugs, drink, and other classic adolescent risk-taking behavior — and some say that's because they're so taken by technology.
Teen birth rates are now a third of what they were in 1990. Drug use and drinking rates are also markedly lower from previous decades.
Politics were the second-biggest concern among teens.
Gen Zs' short lives have been marked by political turmoil and contentious national debates.
Older Gen Zs have early memories of September 11 and witnessed the historic presidential elections of both Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Teens have also been notably involved in gun control awareness protests. And Americans believe more than ever that climate change is happening due to human activity.
Teens told Business Insider:
"The biggest hurdle for my generation will be the environment and the polarization of political parties currently. By environment, I mean my generation will be confronted with figuring out how to do their part to make positive changes in protecting the environment and science in general. In terms of polarized political parties, my generation will have to navigate a world that is trying to be black and white, but really has so much gray area." — 19-year-old
There is entrenched unrest around the globe without obvious solutions, and our planet is slowly dying." — 18-year-old
We think of Gen Zs as being social-justice warriors — but they’re just as focused on economics.
Nearly 10% of teens said debt and the economy will be the biggest roadblock for Gen Zs. They’re particularly worried about how they’ll pay for college.
An equal amount pointed to social justice and identity issues:
"Honestly, social injustices are going to be a really big thing throughout my lifetime. Many things are being brought to light and I don't see them going away any time soon." — 17-year-old
"Ending police brutality towards black people." — 16-year-old
Mental health was another top concern among teens.
A quarter of Gen Zs summarized their generation's mood as "stressed." And 17% opted for "depressed."
Seven percent of teens told Business Insider that mental health will be a major problem for Generation Z. "Dealing with and overcoming stress and anxiety and depression issues," a 17-year-old told Business Insider.
And not unlike every other group of teens before them, some said their biggest long-term worries were adulthood and dealing with the biases of older generations.
Teens told Business Insider:
"Our biggest hurdle will probably be learning how to function on your own." — 14-year-old
"I believe that Generation Z will have to overcome the fact that we are not as prepared for adult life as we think. While we're politically informed, I don't think we’re practically informed, if that makes sense. Most of us don't know how to do things, like, balance a checkbook and pay bills." — 15-year-old
"Showing older generations that we are more than kids that are just attached to their phones, that we do have opinions that need to be heard, and that we have skills to offer that older generations never had. Upside to being a digital native!" — 17-year-old
Although teens have a lot of opinions about technology, the thing they’re most concerned with at this moment is school.
Nearly three-quarters of teens said their biggest source of stress was academics or college admissions.
"Most of my friends and I are almost constantly on edge. We have a lot of stress in our lives and always seem to put too much on our plates," a 17-year-old told Business Insider. "We also just have a more cynical outlook in general and are less sure about the security (financially and otherwise) of our futures."
Family was distant second at 10%, with friends and extracurricular activities following.
Arts, engineering, and medicine are the most popular major choices.
Business Insider categorized what respondents said they want to major in, and certain trends became clear.
A fifth want to major in creative fields, like dance or graphic design. At 16% each, health and engineering shared second-place popularity. Business, other science fields, and liberal arts majors trailed behind.
Though teens say technology cause them a lot of problems, they’re also positive that their unprecedented access to information makes them more unique — and even better — than the generations who came before them.
Teens told Business Insider:
"Today, teenagers are infinitely more well-informed. We're able to form our own opinions on issues, as we're able to immediately access both sides of an argument online." — 15-year-old
"Geographic location is not a problem and does not define who we are. Though the US is a mostly a Christian nation, atheism is increasing and Asian cultures, like anime and K-pop, are becoming more and more popular among Gen Z and even millennials." — 18-year-old
"The availability of information allows modern teens to be more informed and causes them to be more disillusioned than those of past generations." — 18-year-old
And they say they’re more accepting and open-minded than any generation before them.
Almost 3% of teenagers in 2018 don't identify as either male or female — a significant uptick from previous year. Almost half of Gen Zs are minorities, compared to 22% of Baby Boomers.
They're in favor of a variety of social movements, according to AwesomenessTV. Eight in 10 support Black Lives Matter, 74% are in favor of transgender rights, and 63% support feminism.
Teens told Business Insider:
"We've broken a lot of stereotypes in our generation." — 17-year-old
"Teens now are more motivated to be the change the really want to see in the world. This generation is more determined to actually make a difference in their lifetime and see the fruit of their labor." — 19-year-old

Car insurance car location?
Hi, im looking to buy a car that i would occassionally use. i work in birmingham and live in the city centre but need a car for oncall. when im not oncall i get the train. when i dont need the car i would leave it in nottingham with my parents where my dad would occassionally use it. the car would be kept more at the nottingham address than my birmingham one. insurance is cheaper at nottingham so can i put that as the car location even though it would sometimes be in birmingham. it sounds obvious but an insurance company has really confused me saying it must be in birmingham which makes no sense as the car would be kept more in nottz. ive been told insurance companies will try there hardness to avoid paying out say for example if the car was stolen. please help!""

And I'm 61. I've searched the web without luck - insurance agents who've called me say my condition makes me Uninsurable. Either that or I'm contacted by scam artists.

In need of a good dental insurance plan in South Florida.
I desperately need braces but I can't afford them, neither can my parents. I have two teeth that I call my shark teeth because they grew in back of my normal line of teeth. One on the top, and one on the bottom. So it bothers the hell out of my tongue and I can't stand it anymore. I'm always getting those annoying sore taste buds, like one would get if they bite their tongue, on my tongue because one of my shark teeth is my fang so it hurts like hell. I need to fix my teeth but I'll need a good dental insurance plan that covers a big percentage of the cost of my braces. And it cant be just a dental discount plan, those on average only discount 25% and I need more than that. I'm 17, I live with my parents and they'll be paying for it, but it will only be a single plan, not a family plan. I live in South Florida. So if anyone can give me the name of a great insurance plan, then you'll be a miracle worker. Thank you.""

""By about how much will insurance increase, sedan vs. sports car?""
I am 20 years old currently and drive a 2002 Chevy Cavalier. I was considering purchasing a 2000ish model Chevy Camaro Z28 (5.7L v8) and was curious perhaps by how much my insurance will go up. I know obviously that no one can give an accurate guess as to how much since there are numerous factors involved, but just based on my current insurance I thought perhaps someone might be able to guess what the price on the insurance might be. I am currently on my Uncle's insurance plan, and if I bought the vehicle, would transfer the deed to him so as to retain the benefit of his insurance. I pay about 50$ a month for liability for my car due to his insuring many cars currently. I know this is very cheap for one my age, so I thought the camaro insurance might not be bad still. Anyway based on 50$ a month for liability on my 2002 cavalier, any guesses as to what a 2000ish camaro might run me for insurance? (Both liability and comprehensive if you'd like.) I know I can find out for sure by having my uncle call his insurance, but I just wondered if I might get a ballpark estimate before I approach him about it.""

Why won't my insurance company let me transfer our No Claims Discount to a different car/policy?
We have been insuring our Audi with the Co-op, who I've generally found to be reasonable. However, now we have a problem. A couple of months ago we bought a van with the intention of replacing the Audi with the van. But the van needed some work doing on it, so we took out a second insurance on the van with the Co-op, so we could still drive the Audi. At the time, I was disappointed to be told that we could not have a No Claims Bonus on the van, as they said it could only be applied to one policy at a time. But they gave the clear impression that when we cancel the Audi insurance, we could then transfer the NCB to the van. The Audi has now broken down, so we want to cancel its insurance. However, yesterday when I called them, they now said they cannot transfer the NCB to the van as it would be being transferred 'mid-season' to a different car policy. They said they could only have applied it to the van if we had changed the original Audi's policy to cover the van, instead of taking out a different insurance policy for the van. This seems ridiculous. Surely, we are entitled to our NCB?! Why should it matter that it is mid-season or not? I explained that if I cancelled our insurances with them and went to another company, I would be given a NCB on the van so why won't they give it to me. They agreed! I really don't want to change, as I don't trust other companies and the Co-op seem more ethical than others. But this seems so stupid. To get round this silly rule without changing company, I'm thinking of cancelling the van insurance and changing the Audi insurance to the van, ie. do what they said I should have done in the beginning. What do you think?! (Also, is it ok to keep the Audi uninsured, given that it cannot be driven, but is parked on a public road?)""

Ownership of whole life insurance?
My grandfather bought me whole life insurance (paid up in full) when I was an infant and then made my father the owner. I am the insured. My father and I are no longer on speaking terms and I want ownership of my life insurance. Because I am 23, shouldn't the policy have become mine when I became an adult? Giving a police report to your insurance....?
I need to give a copy of a police report to my insurance company for an act of vandalism to my parents car. I am 20 and I was using the car when it was vadalized. In the report it stated how I suspected my ex girlfriend of doing the act. It states specific information such as her age, ethnicity, address, etc. I have very overbearing parents who are consistently trying to control my life. I told them about the incident but not the specifics and I really do not want them to find out any information about my ex girlfriend because it may cause problems. My parents told me they were going to try and get the police report I filed. Can they do this, or can the report only be requested by the party who filed the grievance. I already got the report for my insurance records because they requested a copy, but how much of the report do I have to give them. Another page provides a narrative which states specifics about the incident and how we broke up etc. Do I have to provide that to the insurance company as well?""

Hi, I'm 17 in a week & will be starting my driving lessons. I have my theory booked for a few days after & aim to pass in around 6 weeks, depending on the waiting list for the test, having 3-4 lessons a week. Driving a car isn't a problem for me, have had plenty of practise on tracks in my dads weapon ;) & have for the last 8 weeks or so been going to an empty industrial estate one or twice a week, driving my mums cooper S or occasionally my uncles M3. Just need practice with the ways of public roads from my instructor. Anyway, as you can probably tell I've had a fair bit of experience driving fairly fast cars, so thats where i need advice - can anybody suggest any fairly fast cars that are reasonable to insure? or any cheap insurance company's, or any ways to get insurance down, as long as they aren't completely ridiculous lies, I want to keep it as legit as possibly ideally. So far I've been quoted 1600-ish on a standard golf on my mums insurance, but ideally want something a bit quicker then that. My budget for a car + insurance overall is 4-5k. My ideal car would be a GTI, anybody know where i can insure one cheap-ish? ALSO, *PLEEEEASE* no do-gooder's telling me it is 'fronting' to go on my mums insurance, I am well aware of this, however I am also aware that if the car is registered in my mums name with the DVLA, then they don't have a leg to stand on. I have checked this with one of my mums friends, a solicitor. Also, nobody telling me that I 'wouldn't be able to handle the power' or that I'd 'kill myself', believe me, I'd smoke you ;). Sorry its a bit long, please help! :-)""

Someone hit our car in a walmart parking lot. Our tail light was broken and the estimated cost to replace it is $420-$500. Since it is under $750, we didn't report to police or DMV. How much will my car insurance go up?
Two weeks ago I rear ended a Ford F150. There was very little damage done to their truck, but my mazda protoge was declared totaled. No ambulance was called and the people in the truck acted just fine. The driver was a lady who I thought was just obese but it turns out from the police report that she was 9 months pregnant. I was not arrested or anything at this scene but I did get a ticket for careless driving by failing to yield. I am a 25 year old male btw and I was on my mom's insurance driving her car. We called the insurance and found out that she was monitored and the baby was ok. She was due next week, but the insurance hasn't heard about the delivery or anything. The lady, however is claiming neck and back injuries. Will my insurance go up more because of the accident AND her claims or just the accident itself?

""Hit and Run, no witnesses, lying to insurance?""
So, I was with my girlfriend and we parallel parked in a space which we soon realized was restricted. So she pulls out of the space, too close to the delivery truck in front of her, and side swipes it on the way out. We pull off to the side, see no damage to the truck, but a huge gash in the side of her car. We decide to leave, since the only damage is hers. The next morning, she goes to the body shop to get the damage assessed. They tell her it is going to be over $4000 to repair. She decides to file it with insurance, saying that she had left her car parked on the street, and found it this way, assuming it was a hit and run in the opposite direction. Had she asked me before doing this, I probably would have advised against lying about it, but she has. So, the insurance inspector is coming to assess the damage in the next few days. My question is, how rigorous are these inspections? Will these guys be able to look at a gash in the side of her car, and tell that it was inflicted by her sideswiping a truck, not the other way around?""

Insurance companies use credit reports?
Just got notice from my insurance company (auto only) that they are going to be ordering insurance loss history reports and motor vehicle reports. They will help determine our eligibility for insurance and the price we may be charged. All well and good. But here's the kicker, the part I don't get. They also say that they may order additional consumer reports that include our credit info. They may use a credit-based insurance score based on that info. And they may use a 3rd party to develop our credit-based insurance score. Is this normal? Do many companies do this? Is this something that anyone else is outraged about, and is anyone fighting this? How Much Will My Insurance Go Up At 10km/h Over The Speed Limit?
I got a speeding ticket for going 60km/h in a 50km/h zone while trying to pass someone (which says in the driving handbook that it's legal as long as it's under 20km). I took it to the court and I was found guilty, I've never had any tickets in the whole 5 years I've been driving and no accidents at all. My insurance is already through the roof because I have a newer car and I'm only 23 and they said my premium won't have a big drop until I'm 25 anyway.

""Insurance Claim estimate lower than expected, what do I do?""
An elderly lady backed up into my car a few days ago and we decided it'd be best to file an insurance claim. After the claim was ruled in my favor I was sent to a body shop for an estimate of the repair. The damage was to the rear quarter panel of my car which consisted of a scrape across the panel and a quarter sized dent in the panel. The insurance adjuster gave me an estimate and check for 855$. My question is in regards to the repairs, I feel that since this is 100% the other party's fault and since I am the person who has to drive the car that I am entitled to the maximum premium in repairs. I have been reading on Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) and most will say that its the cheap way of making a repair. Does anyone know if it would be possible to go back and get a new estimate/settlement for a new rear quarter panel? Basically my logic is this, if you damage any of my property it should be 100% my call if I want to settle for a compromise or not.""

Okay so we have two cars. One 1992 buick and a 2006 civic coupe. I usually drive the coup and my name was on the insurance for it, but recently my parents swapped insurance to save money but it involved switching my name to the buick and their name onto the civic. Auto insurance involuntarily cancelled?
I got a new auto insurance begining June. And I had an hail damage and hit and run case towards the end of June. On July 30 there was an accident, other person involved was at fault as he rear-ended my car. I reported all these occurances. I get a involuntary cancellation of the auto insurance policy after a couple of days. They sent me this notice and also made me aware of the right to dispute this with the State commisoner for Insurance. Now, when I go shopping for new insurance, I get an increased premium quote. None of the reported claims are my fault and I do not know if I have to dispute this case with the commisioner for insurance or not and not sure how much money I have to spend towards it. Health Insurance for 18 going to 19 year old?

Will my auto insurance go up?
I am a California San Diego resident. Four days ago, it was raining very heavily and I was driving a carpool lane on the freeway at about 60-65mph. All of a sudden my car hydroplaned and spinned 360 degrees about 3times and then it finally stopped when my car's rear crashed into the concrete median. FORTUNATELY, it was 4am and this accident did not involve anyone else. I had to leave the place like nothing had happened, because I was on my way to the airport. When I arrived at the airport I looked at my car's rear and the bumper and trunk was heavily damaged. Now, I am in a foreign country enjoying my vacation. My questions are following: (1) Will my insurance go up if I report this accident to my auto insurance? I have a full coverage. (2) Will I be in problem if I report this accident when it has been 4days? I really had no time until now because I had to fly and then settle a problem over here in Asia. How much does insurance cost for a 16 year old newly licensed driver and a car?
Why are Pickup trucks so expensive to insure?
ok, I'm 17 and I own a 1999 Dodge Ram 4x4. I pay an insane amount for insurance, and I know I'm a teenager, but I haven't had any tickets or accidents to make it go up. Anyway, my truck is really common in my area, there are Ford, Chevy, and Dodge trucks everywhere you look. But yet I compare the insurance of my truck to a brand new Camaro SS, and the Camaro way cheaper, Heck I compared it to a Brand new Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG, and it's still way cheaper. I'm thinking about getting a little newer Dodge Ram, but the insurance is a little more expensive on it than what I'm already paying. So why are trucks the most expensive vehicles to insure? I mean if they are in a low speed accident, they don't cost nearly as much to fix as a Brand new expensive car such as a Mercedes with expensive parts, and trucks don't get damaged as easily either. It's kind of frustrating that I have a 11 year old vehicle that you see everywhere, and the cost to insure it is outrageous already, but even If I get the same truck only 5 years old, it's even more to insure, which is understandable seeing how it's newer. I know trucks are big, but even a Brand new Suburban cost less to insure than my 11 year old truck. The truck I'm thinking about buying is the most expensive vehicle possible to insure on a standard drivers license.""

55 Things Your Grandparents Lived Without — Can You?
I once heard a story about a young woman proudly showing off her new kitchen to her grandmother. The kitchen had the latest and greatest of everything—high-end range, refrigerator with water and ice through the door, gentle-glide drawers, and granite countertops.
As the older woman admired the kitchen, her granddaughter asked her, “Grandma, what is the thing you like most about it?”
“Running water,” the grandmother replied.
For me, that story has always reminded me to keep my blessings and challenges in perspective. Many of our grandparents grew up with what we would likely consider privation by today’s standards. Depending upon the ages of you and your grandparents, and on your family’s geography and lifestyle, it’s possible there is a wide gap between that which you take for granted and what your grandparents once lived without.
Assuming your grandparents were born somewhere between the end of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th, here are a few of the things many of us consider to be necessities today that our grandparents probably lived some or all of their lives without.
Personal computers. Actually, most people old enough to be parents today have lived at least part of their lives without home computers.
Laptops. There’s a good chance that anyone born before the year 2000 has not always had one.
Smart phones. We all remember life without smart phones.
Tablets and other modern devices. Most of us remember when the word “device” didn’t have anything to do with communication.
Voice-activated devices. Hey Alexa, how long ago were you invented?
Mobile phones of any kind. Lots of us grew up without one.
The Internet. Our grandparents probably grew up using encyclopedias, if they were lucky.
Google. Most of us remember the teacher telling us to look words up in the dictionary.
Cloud storage. Some of our grandparents might have thought humanity had gone ‘round the bend if someone told them they were storing photos in a cloud.
YouTube. Mindblowing, when you think about it.
Credit cards. The rule of thumb was once that if you didn’t have the money today, you didn’t buy it today.
Debit cards. Our grandparents probably grew up on just cash and checks.
Big houses. Homes are much larger than they once were.
Multiple bathrooms in one home. Your grandparents likely got by with just one bathroom for the whole family to share.
Indoor plumbing. Your grandparents might have even had to use an outdoor privy and lug water for washing.
Electricity. Although urban areas had electricity for most of the last century, it was not available to many rural residents until decades later.
Central heating and air conditioning. Many of our grandparents might consider this a real luxury.
Online shopping. Once upon a time, in a galaxy not all that far away, people had two choices: they bought from the local store, or else they pored over a print catalog and filled out forms with pens and put money in an envelope and waited for weeks for the thing they ordered to arrive. Now, we can lie on the couch in our pajamas and buy just about anything—the world of shopping is literally at the tip of our fingers.
Cheap airfare. Buying an airplane ticket was once a really big deal, mostly reserved for very special occasions or for wealthy people.
Uber rides. Call some stranger and ask them to come pick you up? Sure, strangers helped people out in the good old days. But it wasn’t Uber.
Online financing and mortgages. For most of our grandparents, seeking a loan was a lot harder process than it is today. It included a long paper application, at least one face-to-face interview, and a multiday wait. The last time I took out a mortgage, I entered a few facts and figures on my home computer and got an answer within minutes.
Medical test results available almost immediately. In the old days, people got blood drawn at the hospital and waited for two weeks for the results to arrive in the mail. Nowadays, your doctor often gets the results later the same day.
Huge closets full of clothing, shoes, and accessories. I don’t know how many purses or pairs of shoes my grandmother had, but I bet I have more. Way more.
Dishwashers. Many of us alive today have lived part or all of our lives hand-washing dishes.
Kitchen electrics. Our grandparents might have had a toaster or a stand mixer, but probably didn’t have the wide range of small electrical appliances available to us today, from smoothie machines to stick blenders to juicers to expresso makers to spiralizers.
Automatic icemakers. Filling ice cube trays and setting them in the freezer without spilling them and then busting the ice out of them is hard. Especially if they’re those old-fashioned aluminum kind. Reaching into the freezer and grabbing a few ice cubes that your freezer made and dumped into a container for you is easy.
Overnight mail delivery. Some of our grandparents lived in a time when a letter took several days just to cross a few state lines, and people spent extra on “air mail” when it was urgent. But even air mail didn’t arrive the next day.
Reliable weather forecasts. Meteorology wasn’t as precise as it is today. They didn’t have access to radar and other modern tools, and it was often a guess at best.
Warnings for natural disasters. Scientists and officials still don’t get it right all the time, but warnings for blizzards, tsunamis, and floods are far more efficient than they were in our grandparents’ day.
Comfortable passenger cars. Some of our grandparents could never even have imagined the creature comforts in modern cars. Power windows and mirrors, heated seats, air conditioning, state-of-the-art sound systems, cruise control, lumbar support, navigation systems—wow!
Fast food. The ability to zip in, order, pick up, and zip out with a bag of food in your hand is a relatively modern concept.
Drive-up windows. We can do a lot without getting out of our cars these days. We can buy food, do our banking, pick up prescription meds, grab a few groceries, and in some regions even do convenience-store shopping.
Live-saving vaccinations. A world where diseases like polio, diphtheria, pertussis, influenza, tuberculosis, and smallpox threatened lives and caused irreparable disability existed in many of our grandparents’ lifetimes.
Life-changing medications. From antibiotics to statins to antipsychotic drugs to hormone replacements to synthetic insulin to pain relief to cancer chemotherapy, our grandparents had far fewer choices.
Surgeries and other medical advancements. Our grandparents might not have had the option of knee- or hip-replacement, or prosthetic limbs, or cataract surgery, or even cutting-edge diagnostic procedures like MRIs and mammograms.
Food imported from all over the globe. Our grandparents probably couldn’t walk into the produce section and choose from hundreds of different fresh vegetables and fruits 365 days a year. Buying local is important, but it’s nice to be able to occasionally indulge in fresh produce on a cold winter day.
Replacement formula for babies. Our grandparents had far fewer choices when it came to infant nutrition. Mother’s milk is not always possible, and cow’s milk by itself is incomplete.
Television. Many of our grandparents grew up without TV. And even those who did have a television often had just one, in the living room, with just black-and-white pictures and limited selections.
TV on demand. Today’s viewers can choose between cable, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and dozens of other channel choices. Our grandparents? Not so much.
Remote controls. I have one for my TV, one for my Roku box, and one for my internet radio. That’s not a lot of remote controls by today’s standards, but it’s three more than my grandparents had.
Power tools. Anyone who has ever used a cordless impact driver or a table saw or a belt sander can testify to how much easier and faster and more efficient they are than their manual counterparts. Our grandparents did it the hard way.
Plastic. The amount of plastic most of us use in our everyday lives is staggering. Very little of our lives is untouched by plastic, from sandwich bags to house siding to toothbrush handles to storage totes to snow sleds to rakes to water buckets to trash bags to lawn furniture to car dashboards to dishware to children’s toys to zippers. Our grandparents had products made out of wood, pottery, glass, metal, and natural materials. But they might not have grown up with much plastic.
Disposable diapers. Many people alive today spent their early years in cloth diapers, or possibly even used them for their own children. The convenient remove-and-toss method was not an option a few generations ago.
Disposable tissues. Many of our grandparents used reusable handkerchiefs.
Paper towels and napkins. People used reusable cloth for cleanup jobs far more often in our grandparents’ day.
Disposable tableware. Plates, cups, and flatware were items which our grandparents bought once, used every day, and washed over and over.
Microwave ovens. When I told my young children that I had not had a microwave in my childhood home, they asked me in hushed astonished tones, “How did you live?!” I got by, it turns out. Just like most of our grandparents did.
Synthetic fabrics. A lot of garment labels today list fibers I’ve never even heard of. Our grandparents had far fewer choices of materials for clothing, outerwear, accessories, and home dĂ©cor.
Ready-made foods at the grocery store. In our grandparents’ day, the grocery store carried mostly whole foods. Heat-and-eat options are a relatively recent phenomenon.
Ready-made coffee. Our grandparents made their own coffee at home. Without a Keurig machine, and possibly even without an electric drip coffeemaker. Going out to the local coffee shop, or even the corner gas station, for a cup of coffee, hasn’t always been a thing people do.
Automatic laundry machines. Many of our grandparents didn’t have dryers. And if they had a washer, it was probably a lot less user-friendly than the ones we have today.
If our grandparents did have refrigerators, they were not like the ones we have today.
Riding lawn equipment. Our grandparents probably used a walk-behind mower, with or without a gas-powered engine, to mow their small lawn.
Electric heating pads and chemical heating patches. Our grandparents probably used hot water bottles and poultices instead.
Paid time off work. Paid vacations have not always been common, and maternity/paternity leave didn’t always exist.
This list could truly go on forever, and I have barely scratched the surface. Such a lot has changed in just a few generations that it must be difficult for some of our grandparents to even recognize the planet we inhabit today as the same one they grew up on. Some of the changes truly represent advancement, while others make us all wonder if modern-day goods and services might have gone too far. But most of us embrace the things we’ve grown accustomed to, and we may find it challenging to live without the things our grandparents didn’t have.
What would you add to our list? Share your thoughts in the section below:

My TV Childhood: Channel 9 (WGN)
youtube
When I would make my way around the analog dial as a kid, the first three channels I'd hit were the big three networks: 2 (CBS), 5 (NBC) and 7 (ABC). If nothing there caught my fancy, I'd enter the mysterious world beyond network television--the uncharted territory of
local channels. And no channel got much more local than Chicago's Very Own, channel 9 (WGN).
Even though it was one of the original "superstations" broadcast to cable subscribers nationwide, WGN was unmistakably a Chicago brand through and through. The call letters drew inspiration from the Chicago Tribune, aka the World's Greatest Newspaper, whose then parent company, Tribune Media, also owns WGN--for now, at least. (The newspaper today falls under a spinoff company called tronc; it's all sort of a mess.)
But as WGN falls prey to the current trends and tragedies of modern media, the brand for me will always be a gateway into the past, a fulcrum of my nostalgia not just for how I was introduced to television, but to the city of Chicago itself.
Looking back, I can trace many milestones of my pop culture perspective to shows and moments that ran on channel 9.
The Bozo Show
Tumblr media
For the children of Chicagoland, being in the audience for a taping of The Bozo Show was the grade school equivalent of getting tickets to Saturday Night Live. The wait list for The Bozo Show was eight years long. Eight years! The demand was so high that when a couple learned they were expecting a baby, their first step wasn't to create a registry, but to send away for tickets to The Bozo Show.
My grandmother had done just that when my mom was pregnant with me, and a few years later, her foresight paid off. We would always watch The Bozo Show before school while we ate breakfast, eagerly awaiting the day we'd be in that audience, and now the day had arrived. We were going to The Bozo Show! I think I was around 7, which would put my brother around 3. My mom drove us into the city to the WGN studio, which was probably even smaller and cheaper than I remember.
I do vividly recall my mom commenting on how funny it was to see the actor who played Bozo, Bob Bell, smoking a cigarette in full costume during commercial breaks. (The voice of Krusty the Clown, by Chicago native Dan Castellaneta, was based on Bell.)
We sat on wooden bleachers and hoped we'd get picked to play the show's highlight segment, the Grand Prize Game. It's funny to think back on how legitimately thrilling it was to watch 6-year-olds throw Ping-Pong balls into buckets. But it was all in the hopes of winning childhood's version of "The Price Is Right" pulling the curtain back on a new car. If you hit bucket number 6, you would win
 A NEW BIKE!
Tumblr media
Nobody won the grand prize that day, and the rest of the show was largely forgettable. But that didn't dampen the excitement that we had been there live, which also meant WE WERE GOING TO BE ON TV. They told the parents what date the show would air, and we started counting down. Because the studio was so tiny, we knew we got on camera at some point.
The morning arrived. The show started. We didn't see ourselves, so we kept watching. Then the Grand Prize game started. Wait, these aren't the same kids. Then one of the contestants won the bike. Our kid didn't win the bike.
This wasn't our show.
Did we have the date wrong? Maybe? My mom called the station.
She hung up furious. They told her there was a mix-up at the station, and our episode got taped over. Which meant it was gone. Forever.
We of course were crushed, but I think my mom took the news the hardest. And now as a parent, I understand why. This was a moment she'd been anticipating for years, to give her children a memory of a unique, growing-up-in-Chicago experience. And now because of a mundane clerical error, she could never get that moment back.
The experience became family lore for decades to come. And in a way, that probably made it more special than if we'd actually seen our episode. My mom never quite gave up her grudge with WGN, but fortunately for me, they quickly won me back over.
Cubs Baseball
Tumblr media
Throughout my childhood, WGN was the exclusive local TV and radio home of the Chicago Cubs. Harry Caray and Steve Stone narrated many of my summers, calling the games in their trademark styles: Harry with his bombastic, drunk enthusiasm and Steve with his nasal voice of reason.
My Cubs fandom hit its peak in 1989, when the team won the NL Central division. I was between 7th and 8th grade, which meant I was too young to have a summer job, but I was too old to be out riding my bike around the neighborhood. As a result, I spent many bright, sunny afternoons parked in front of the TV watching the Cubs.
Looking up WGN's opening titles from that season on YouTube took me right back to my old family room, an awkward preteen putting off the complex and inevitable task of growing up by immersing myself in the simplicity and structure of baseball.
"It Sounded Like a Freight Train"
Tumblr media
Midwestern children in the '80s were taught to fear two things: strangers and tornadoes. For the latter, our schools would subject us to twice-yearly drills, sending us into the hallways to crouch among the dusty spiderwebs under our coat racks. We were well-versed in the difference between a tornado watch (conditions are right for a possible tornado) and a tornado warning (a funnel has been spotted). And, of course, we had seen the classic meteorology documentary The Wizard of Oz.
Once we got cable and had access to this remarkable new concept called The Weather Channel, my brother, Drew, became fascinated with weather. Specifically, weather videos. He would watch any coverage of storm chasers, hurricane trackers, you name it. So when WGN produced a whole hour just about tornadoes, Drew set the VCR. Which is why for a few weeks in 1991, I became very well acquainted with “It Sounded Like a Freight Train.” The show was hosted by WGN's--and arguably Chicago's--most respected meteorologist, Tom Skilling. I think at one point Drew basically wanted to be Tom Skilling when he grew up.
Tumblr media
Skilling is still working and a few years ago, Drew submitted a question to his Chicago Tribune weather column. Skilling published it with his answer and I think for Drew it's pretty much been downhill from there.
WGN Movies
One of the great legacies of local stations is the hours and hours of airtime they filled by running old movies. I'm sure I watched countless movies on WGN over the years, but two will always stand out.
Tumblr media
If I had to trace my interest in comedy to one moment, it would be the night my dad and I were flipping channels and found Airplane! on channel 9. "Oh, this movie's so funny. Have you seen it?" I hadn't, so we stopped and watched. It was right in the middle of this scene, when the flight attendant plays a song and keeps knocking out a sick girl's IV as she swings her guitar. It had just started, and I remember my dad starting to laugh anticipating the joke, and when that first swing hit I was right there with him. Even once I knew the joke was going to repeat, the scene is so expertly timed and performed that by the end, I was crying laughing.
To this day, Airplane! is one of my all-time favorite movies, in large part because it triggers such a happy memory of sharing that moment with my dad, the type of happy accident that's quickly fading from the way we all watch TV today.
Tumblr media
On the far less humorous side, WGN used to have an annual showing of Amadeus. As a young piano student, I had learned about Mozart and thought it'd be fun to watch a movie about him. Of course, Amadeus is a dark, dramatic portrayal of Mozart and his rivalry with Salieri--and it quickly became my favorite movie. You know, like most 10-year-olds.
I taped the movie one year and watched it so many times that if I come across the full version now, I know exactly where WGN inserted their commercial breaks. (I'm super fun at parties.)
SCTV
Tumblr media
When I became interested in obsessed with Second City around 1990, I was thrilled to find out WGN ran repeats of SCTV. The catch: They were filler, so they ran at odd times overnight. So every week when we'd get our new TV Guide, I would scour each night's listings for channel 9 to find exactly when SCTV was running that week. Then I'd set the VCR--MANUALLY, mind you--for each night's episode.
Nick at Nite also occasionally ran SCTV, but for some reason I had a stronger connection with those WGN reruns. I think it's not only the Chicago connection, but because SCTV was about a low-budget local station, not too dissimilar from WGN. The show poked fun at local programming and personalities and satirized many of the old movies and movie stars I saw first on channel 9.
Which brings me to

The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon
Tumblr media
As a kid, I was introduced to Jerry Lewis two ways: 1) Martin Short's impression of him on SCTV and 2) the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon.
I had no idea who Jerry Lewis was. I thought he was just a guy who hosted this telethon each year. And being such a huge fan of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, I thought Ed McMahon's presence on the telethon each year was a really good get. This event must be really special if they got Ed McMahon.
In truth, it was a really special event. Despite Lewis' not-so-amicable split with the telethon in 2011, the decades he spent prior hosting--many years for the full 20+ hours--make up a remarkable philanthropic legacy. I remember getting legitimately choked up when they would do a leaderboard tally and reveal a new record-setting amount of money raised. My mom usually gave in when Jerry himself got emotional every year during his trademark "You'll Never Walk Alone" closing song.
Back during the '80s, it wasn't common to see children with special needs on TV. Because of the Jerry Lewis telethon, I realized how many families were living with incredible challenges and how very lucky I was. While he will be remembered first and foremost for his comedy, I'm thankful to Jerry Lewis for introducing me to caring and compassion.
Tumblr media
Today, social media has made disability awareness and charity fundraising part of daily life. The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon was simultaneously a throwback to the old days and ahead of its time. This Labor Day weekend, the first since Lewis' death on August 20, I'll be remembering both his legacy of giving and the experience of watching the telethon on channel 9 with my family. It was another moment when I had a touchpoint to my parents' youth, watching a star they grew up watching, too. I sense there won't be many moments like that with Archie, many more entertainers like Jerry Lewis, or many more stations like WGN. Unlike any other number on the dial, channel 9 helped shape who I am, both in the programming and in how it connected me more deeply to the people around me: my parents, my brother, my city. WGN is part of the reason that no matter where I live or how far I am from home, I'll always be one of Chicago's very own.

Real estate questions answered free from Riley Aviles
Q: Real estate agent:e-mail before I can phone, incorrect wiring advice is sent the morning of the closure by hacker hacked.
Am I at fault? Florida agent. Attorney Replies Richard Paul Zaretsky A: You're definitely on the short end of the incorrect stick - See this link for an article I wrote exactly on this particular situation - where your email was infiltrated using a malware that took control of your e-mail. See this link: YOUR E-MAIL IS BEING SAW = YOUR CLIENTS VICTIMIZED : THE HACK STORY - actvra.in/4Ph6 (you will most likely need to type this into your address line in your pc.) The above mentioned link is an article which was copied in a few Realtor newsletters along with the Property Council magazine of The Fund. As for obligation, you need to inform your agent, inform your liability carrier (since this can be a problem likely along with your personal e-mail, you need to inform both your homeowner's insurance as well as your professional liability insurance underwriters). I guess the banks for the buyer (who sent the money to the fake wire instructions) was advised. It might be that they can recall the cable. Also, the robber in these types of scenarios is generally notoriously careless plus they don't cross their "t's" and dot their "i's" - so the cable may in fact not have successfully gone through. There may likewise be obligation of the party that has been to have the resources - for them not correctly safeguarding the wire instructions - if it absolutely was their email that was undermined. Begin with the bank, as it really is time sensitive. Then the agent and insurance carriers. And all the best.
Q: Land that was empty was purchased by me in CO. The land is 50% his dead fathers and 50% sellers. How do you get the property 100% in my name?
The Colorado property was deeded to the seller's dad and mother. His mother subsequently used a warranty deed which states she is the only owner to title it. The county has info online that states the land is 50% the dead father's and 50% the son's. I don't live in Colorado and Nevada is lived in by the seller. The seller merely told me that the land was put right into a trust before it was deeded by his mother over to him but this info just isn't recorded in the county. Any method to retroactively record this trust? Lawyer Solution Tristan Kenyon Schultz A: You have two choices. First, you are able to wait for the deceased father's estate - this enables you to either negotiate with all the newest beneficiary or produce a claim for the land. The drawback of the approach is that Colorado permits up to 3 years for an estate to be probated (and at least 1 year for a creditor--you--to begin probate). In the choice, you seek various tactics that are legal to get full possession of the land. You will require to contact a real estate lawyer in the county where the property is located to give a precise evaluation of how better to proceed since there are too many possible issues and answers.
Q: Simply died do I have to go threw probate, if I am the only child and my last living parent?
Lawyer Answer Vincent J. Bernabei A: Your parent's estate may be subject to probate if your parent possessed assets in their own name during the time of their passing, and there's no combined owner nor any named beneficiary on your own parent's account. Examples add a house in your parent's name alone, or a bank account without any payable on death beneficiary alone, in your parent's name. With regards to the value of your parent's assets, there are several options to probate. As an example, you might be able to transfer possession of the assets by way of a tiny estate affidavit rather than a formal probate proceeding. That is a a cheaper and much quicker procedure than probating the estate.
Q: May I sell the property i purchased at a tax sale that is private to one of the orignal owners youngsters who wants to dwell there
Lawyer Solution Dr Kenneth V Zichi J.D. A: You intend to iN THE EVENT THAT you have the property you can sell it to any adult. A PERSONAL tax sale is mentioned by you yet. To my knowledge there's no such thing. Taxes are owed to the authorities, along with the government cannot sell its tax lien 'in private'.... You may not own the home? Have you ever just purchased some kind of lien? I'd demonstrate the paperwork to your local attorney that is licensed to determine everything you own before you attempt to sell it! This response is offered for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or create an attorney/client relationship. I'm licensed to practice in Michigan only. Please seek competent local legal help in the event that you're feeling you need legal counsel!

Q: Can my neighbor who bought the private road on which I dwell, and which is the only access to my house, limit my access?
I live on a triple dead end and own 4 contiguous houses in the neighborhood while my neighbor's extended family possesses 7 contiguous houses, 2 of that have been constructed in the twenty years since we bought our house from his cousin and the other 3 from his uncle. He purchased the private road that goes only to my houses(and ends facing my house) from precisely the same uncle and now needs to trade it for a big part of our first multi-acre lot so he is able to build another house. From what little I remember of real-estate law from law school, I've told my husband the neighbor cannot impair the sole use of our property and hence we don't need to own the road, particularly as we neither desire to give up any land nor encourage another house in our small area. I think this is borderline blackmail. Thank you. Lawyer Reply Tristan Kenyon Schultz A: Your memory is right. Being the law, there are always complexities, but the dominant (first) estate and its own successors cannot limit or prevent entry to an earlier authorized servient estate if the only real means of access is via the dominant estate. Moving out of English common law, you very likely have a "right of way" easement. In case the easement is recorded you have a simple case (in your favor). When the easement just isn't recorded, you'll have to show the necessity and existence of the easement (from your facts this must not be really challenging).
Q: When you inherit a house which was in a trust does the tax basis change?
The house is owned by the trust. My mother is the trustee and I'm to get your house upon her passing. I've a duplicate of the trust and will. Without increasing the tax basis of your house can I set the title in my own name? Attorney Answer Richard Samuel Price A: I believe that you're discussing the assessed value for property taxes. A transport of a property from parent to child could be excluded from reassessment for property tax purposes. For the primary residence, there is an exclusion that is unlimited. For all other property, the exception is restricted to the first $1M of value. You have to file an application for the exclusion with all the tax assessor within 36 months of the transfer. In summary, that implies that the property taxes should remain exactly the same.
Q: I reside in a house made of two flats the complete house is infested with bedbugs what can I do?
I've an apartment in Nyc, and Ive had bed bugs for the past 1.5 years due to the bottom flat in my building having them. My landlord has had someone who is only an area bug person come out 3 times and didnt fix the trouble. Ive told her many times on the telephone and in person. She only asks me and that I keep because Im frightened she will kick me out paying. What should I do? Ive needed to block my entire apartment of and live only within my family room and sleep on the ground. Lawyer Answers Ali Ebrahimzadeh, Esq. A: Observe: http://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/health/health-topics/bedbugs.page Additional information are mandatory to give an expert evaluation of your problem. The best first step is an Initial Consultation having an Attorney. Q: Does a contract having a management firm survive a sell of property with a fixed lease?
I sold a rental property using a given lease that had 9 months left on the lease using a tenant in place in November. Property and the lease are managed by way of a property management company. Property management switched. The tenant paid rent to the management company that was old and the management company deposited money in my account of rent minus the management fee minus management fee for the time of fresh lease. I concur the brand new owner what was deposited into my account should be paid by me. Nevertheless, I don't consent to the amount piece was kept by the management company. My contract together with the management firm states the management firm can keep the fee's for the duration of the lease. Since I sold the property, I consider the error is really on the newest owner since the contract broke that he bought with all the property when he switched management businesses. Is that right? Lawyer Solution Leonard Robert Grefseng A: All this should be covered by the contract/purchase agreement you entered into with the buyer when you consented to sell to him. Get out that contract and study it to see how things were supposed to be managed. In case the property was sold "subject to" the present contracts and leases, you're correct. All of the existing contracts would bind the buyer, such as the management contract. I presume all this was correctly disclosed to the customer. Something is for sure- the rent can't be kept by you.
Q: My brothers and I own a home that was my grandmothers. None of us live in the house.
Among my brothers will likely want medicaid assistance, it appears him being a partial owner when he dies I 'm concerned about medicaid recovery might not hinder that nevertheless. It's my understanding we own this home as "tenancy in common". Exactly what are our choices with this property in order to avoid some assistance or potential medicaid recovery from medicaid? Lawyer Solution Dr Kenneth V Zichi J.D. A: There CAN be retrieval against YOUR BROTHER'S share of your home, in the event that you possess as Tenants in Common. This may cause a forced sale or other 'problems' for you and also the other common owners, as the people who paid to your brother's care (the taxpayers) work to regain the amount of money they paid. The only '100% easy and certain' means to handle this is to buy your brother's interest out at its fair market value, and then for him to use that cash until it runs out to pay for his own care. It's possible for you to look at some 'fantasy' medicaid qualifying trusts plus they MIGHT work, however finally, your brother using his own cash to buy his care is the only method to guarantee 100% medicaid will not try to recover against his assets.
Q: If the town preparing to deem the house condemned due to the sepetic can I ask for a continuance on a case eviction
They have 5 health violations and haven't fixed them. Town is taking on those to court as well. Plus defamation of character to us. They lied saying we're threating them and they need escorts to property. There's a lot of thing here but I dont wish to spend money only to be put out on the basis of the condemnation. Attorney Reply Ali Ebrahimzadeh, Esq A: Why would you need to live in a house that is condemned? More details are crucial to give a professional evaluation of your dilemma. The best first step is an Initial Consultation with an Attorney. It's possible for you to also read more about me, my qualifications, awards, honors, testimonials, and media appearances/ publications on my law practice site. I practice law in CA, NY, MA, and DC in these regions of law: Contracts & Company, Criminal Defense, Divorce & Child Custody, and Education Law. This reply doesn't constitute legal advice; make any predictions, guarantees, or warranties; or create any Attorney-Client relationship.

Are Netflix original series more culturally relevant than HBO's (2017)?
Marc Bodnick
If culturally means (in part) “what are young people watching” then —increasingly yes, I think so.
Netflix skews very young — 81% of people in the US ages 18–35 have a Netflix subscription. So I’m guessing that Netflix’s original programming are watched by more young people than most HBO shows.
I could find one article online covering this issue (Netflix vs. HBO in cultural relevance). Here it is, a 2013 post from the LA Review of Books — old, but still really good:
The New Canon
WHEN I WAS AN UNDERGRAD, my professor would talk about stars and directors by showing us actual slides of them, all loaded up into the Don Draper “Carousel.” Clips were on actual film, with actual projectionists, or an assortment of badly edited VHS tapes. When a professor recommended a film, I’d go to the video store and rent it for 99 cents, the standard fee for classic movies. I never missed a screening, because it would be nearly impossible to find many of the films on my own, let alone someone with a VHS that wasn’t the common room at the end of my dorm floor. It was the good old analog days, when film and media studies was still nascent, the internet only barely past dial-up, and internet media culture as we know it limited to a healthy growth of BBS, listservs, and AOL chat rooms. It was also less than 15 years ago.
My four years in college coincided with dramatic changes in digital technology, specifically the rise of the (cheap) DVD and the personal computer DVD player. Before, cinephilia meant access to art house theaters or a VHS/television combination in addition to whatever computer you had. . . . by the time I graduated, most computers came standard with a DVD player and ethernet, if not wireless, connectivity. That Fall, I signed up for Netflix. I envied those with TiVo. Two years later, the growing size of hard drives and bandwidths facilitated the piracy culture that had theretofore mostly been limited to music. Then YouTube. Then streaming Netflix. Then Hulu. Then AppleTV. Then HBOGO. Or something like that.
Today, we live in a television culture characterized by cord-cutters and time-shifters. Sure, many, many people still appointment view or surf channels old school style. I know this. I also know people watch the local news. Yet as a 30-something member of the middle class, I catch myself thinking that my consumption habits — I subscribe to Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Full Cable; I still appointment view several shows — are somewhat typical.
I’m so wrong, but not in the way I might have expected. My students taught me that. They watch Netflix, and they watch it hard. They watch it at the end of the night to wind down from studying, they watch it when they come home tipsy, they binge it on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Most use their family’s subscription; others filch passwords from friends. It’s so widely used that when I told my Mad Menclass that their only text for the class was a streaming subscription, only one student had to acquire one. (I realize we’re talking about students at a liberal arts college, but I encountered the same levels of access at state universities. As for other populations, I really don’t know, because Netflix won’t tell me (or anyone) who’s using it.
Some students use Hulu, but never Hulu Plus — when it comes to network shows and keeping current, they just don’t care. For some super buzzy shows, like Game of Thrones and Girls, they pirate or find illegal streams. But as far as I can tell, the general sentiment goes something like this: if it’s not on Netflix, why bother?
It’s a sentiment dictated by economics (a season of a TV show on iTunes = at least 48 beers) and time. Let’s say you want to watch a season of Pretty Little Liars. You have three options:
1) BitTorrent it and risk receiving a very stern cease-and-desist letter from either the school or your cable provider. Unless you can find a torrent of the entire season, you’ll have to wait for each episode to download. What do you do when it’s 1:30 am and you want a new episode now?
2) Find sketchy, poor quality online streams that may or may not infect your computer with a porn virus (plus you have to find individual stable streams for 22 episodes)
or
3) Watch it on Netflix in beautiful, legal HD, with each episode leading seamlessly into the next. You can watch it on your phone, your tablet, your computer (or your television, if it’s equipped); even if you move from device to device, it picks up right where you stopped.
It’s everything an overstressed yet media-hungry millennial could desire. And it’s not just millennials: I know more and more adults and parents who’ve cut the cable cord and acquired similar practices, mostly because they have no idea how to pirate and they only really want to watch about a dozen hours of (non-sports) television a month (who are these people, and what do they do after 8 pm every day?)
Through this reliance on Netflix, I’ve seen a new television pantheon begin to take form: there’s what’s streaming on Netflix, and then there’s everything else.
When I ask a student what they’re watching, the answers are varied: Friday Night Lights, Scandal, It’s Always Sunny, The League, Breaking Bad, Luther, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Arrested Development, The Walking Dead, Pretty Little Liars, Weeds, Freaks & Geeks, The L Word, Twin Peaks, Archer, Louie, Portlandia. What all these shows have in common, however, is that they’re all available, in full, on Netflix.
Things that they haven’t watched? The Wire. Deadwood. Veronica Mars, Rome, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos. Even Sex in the City.
It’s not that they don’t want to watch these shows — it’s that with so much out there, including so much so-called “quality” programs, such as Twin Peaks and Freaks & Geeks, to catch up on, why watch something that’s not on Netflix? Why work that hard when there’s something this easy — and arguably just as good or important — right in front of you?
The split between Netflix and non-Netflix shows also dictates which shows can/still function as points of collective meaning. Talk to a group of 30-somethings today, and you can reference Tony Soprano and his various life decisions all day — in no small part because the viewing of The Sopranos was facilitated by DVD culture. Today, my students know the name and little else. I can’t make “cocksucker” Deadwood jokes (maybe I shouldn’t anyway?); I can’t use Veronica Mars as an example of neo-noir; I can’t reference the effectiveness of montage at finishing a series (Six Feet Under). These shows, arguably some of the most influential of the last decade, can’t be teaching tools unless I screen seasons of them for my students myself.
The networks have long depended on a concept that scholar Raymond Williams dubbed “flow” — the seamless shift from show to commercial to show that creates a televisual flow so natural it’s painful to get out. Netflix does this as well, creating what one of my students has called “inertia problems.” One episode ends, and the countdown to the next begins in the corner. One season ends, and the next one pops before you. One series ends, and it’s ready with fairly accurate suggestions as to the type of programming you’d like to try next. The more you consume Netflix, the more you’ll consume Netflix.
And it’s not like they’re going to run out of content. As the Hollywood studios have tried to play hardball with what films they will and won’t lease, Netflix has turned its focus to television. And it’s not just quality and quasi-quality television: they’re flush with children’s, reality, and British television, with more seasons — and shows — added every month.
So maybe the HBO shows of the golden age fade into the distance, referenced but mostly unwatched, the 2000s equivalent of Hill Street Blues or The Mary Tyler Moore Show. So what? As I wrote last week, I have little interest in fetishing “quality” television, especially as a means of reifying gendered, classist divides between “our” television and that television.
And HBO loves that division — they’re the ones, after all, who pioneered the slogan “It’s not TV, it’s HBO.” They’ve also stubbornly resisted any technology that makes its shows broadly available. You can’t get them on iTunes for months; you can’t use HBOGO unless you’re a service subscriber, and you generally can’t subscribe to HBO without also paying for extended cable — at least a hundred dollar cable bill. I get why they only want rich people watching their shows. I get how exclusivity, in and of itself, is one of the ways that HBO ascribes quality to its programming.
But you know what separates the “good” from the “significant”? Exposure. Not just initial exposure, like the hoopla surrounding the relatively unpopular Girls, but endured attention and familiarity. Viewers of broad ages and classes and tastes watching. Syndication used to do some of this work for us: that’s how I consumed M*A*S*H, My Three Sons, The Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, classic Saturday Night Live, original Star Trek, and even MacGyver. It was MTV reruns, for example, and not ABC, that made My So-Called Life a cultural touchstone: the two words “Jordan Catalano” stand in for a host of dude-related agonies and ecstasies. Granted, you could watch Sex and the City on TBS, and The Wire on BET. But those were Frankenstein edits of the originals — and what little extended cable this generation does watch, it’s generally new content.
Netflix, and other forms of cheap streaming, thus takes up the role formerly occupied by second-run syndication. Only unlike the reruns of M*A*S*H I’d watch every night at 7:00 pm, these reruns are there whenever I want them and without commercials. With the rise of streaming services, we’ve avoided the term “rerun” and its connotations of the hot, bored days of summer. But apart from its foray into original programming, that’s what Netflix is: a distribution service of reruns. And as with second-run syndication, what’s available is what gets watched; what gets watched becomes part of the conversation. It’s not a question of quality, in other words, it’s one of availability.
HBO has always prided itself on being the cool kid in high school. It’s fine having only a few friends, so long as those friends are rich and influential. But no one can stay in high school forever: eventually your world changes, whether you want it to or not. And you know what happens when the cool kid goes to college? He gets lost in the crowd. There’s no one to remind everyone that he’s so cool or exclusive, of what the last decade of his life meant, or why he should be respected and feared today. Even if he throws a really excellent party, he’s still one of many doing the same.
For coolness and distinction to endure, it needs an indelible sense of legacy. HBO’s not in danger of losing that any time in the near future — at least so long as most of the people writing about television are those of us reared on the DVDs of its golden age. But think of the next generation of critics, whose tastes are guided, and will continue to be guided, by streaming availability. For them, Louie and Scandalwill always be more important than Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Newsroom.
This summer, HBO finally gave credence to rumblings that they’d offer HBGO as a stand-alone subscription service. It may happen next year; it may happen in five. But each year they wait, each year that hundreds of thousands of viewers choose what’s at their fingertips over what’s not, their legacy fades. Perhaps that’s for the best? I mean, let it be said: I’m super okay with more people watching Friday Night Lights than Hung. But some, if not all, of those shows deserve better.
